Got a chance to ring it out yesterday. Took it out and ran it good. She ain't a happy camper. Symptoms now are - Seems like it isn't getting all it power at a steady cruise or easy excel. It just sounds half dead. That's the best I can explain it. Some small back fires through carb. And some pretty good popping on easy decel.

170, 4th clip with stock configuration, PMS 1 7/8, ported manifold, Lapped with larger O rings, AIS removed. Cobra LoBoys, 1200 ft elevation or there abouts, Blue jeans with manditory work shirt, I vote for the man, not the party, I like sweet and salty snacks.

Was thinking of maybe going to the 3rd groove (After I check for air leaks.) Any thoughts

Thanks

Post edited by: Musky, at: 2006/09/12 09:01

Musky,

Your problem sounds more like a too lean condition than too rich. I believe you probably have an air leak. One thing you might check is the rubber hose on the back of the BAK filter. The adhesive they use on those things isn't very good and you can easily get an air leak there. I tried different adhesives and finally just stuck a hose clamp on it. That fixed it!

One other thing I noticed about my setup and I really can't explain it. When I had the clip on the fourth position, I had to have my PMS screw a little more open -- almost to three. When I changed the clip to 3.5 (using a .020 washer for spacing) I had to turn the PMS in to around 2. You'd think it'd be just the opposite but that's what actualy worked for me.

Good luck getting things sorted out.

Hey pday

Yeah, kinda leaning towards air leak myself. Can't see it being lean on the 4th groove but i've been wrong plenty of times. Definetly think I will try turning out the PMS. Just want to get some opinions to see if there is a stand out problem to look for. Besides the person doing the work

Thanks

The slight popping on easy decel ... turn the PMS out 1/4 turn at a time. I'm assuming that the exahust was not touched and it didn't pop before.

The rest looks OK.

You've tried the WOT test and all it good???

Check the float level, you may have bumped it or it was set too low at the factory.

As was mentioned, manifold leak not out of the question.

Replace blue jeans with tight leather pants.

Doc,

Are those tight leather pants to eliminate a possible "air leak"?

Hey Doc

Exhaust wasn't touched and didn't pop before. I tried to be real carefull when I pulled the float bowl but I suppose I could have bumped the float. I, uh, well, forgot to do the WOT test I do know that when I kick her in the ass she goes and when I let off the gas on a hard decel I get the jake brake sound. (Love that sound ) but no popping or backfire.

It's not unusual to have it set wrong at the factory. Mine was too hight. But we'll blame you.

Part of is the 2 to 2 pipe design and part is the PMS. To lean on the PMS is noticeable as 'popping' once the revs come down.

Naturally I'm going to see if I can get at the PMS without taking everything apart. I can reach the brass cover with the BAK on but I think I'll have to take it off to get at it. My thinking is (because I don't want to take the tank and carb off) it's the PMS or an air leak. Or both. If that don't work I'll take the float bowl off.

And here is something that should be added to EVERY set of instructions for re jetting. Just save yourself the grief and cut slots in the stock float bowl screws with a Dremel and use a flat blade to take them out.. Can they make screws out of any softer metal??
