Doc, do I understand you correctly that you just tapped the piece of aluminum (after you got your length right) Left hand one end ,right hand other, and screwed the stock pieces back on? Couple of questions, I'm probably gonna hafta use a hiem joint on the shifter end of the shiftrod. Is that end (forward end) L/H thread or R/H ? Also , do those stock dohinkys that are on the shiftrod just "pop" on? Your advice is very appreciated.Dan  |

That would be correct but I have Legends forward controls so the front part of the shift rod is SAE to match the FC and the back of the shift rod is metric to match the bike. I bought a HD heim joint which connects the new shift rod to the FC.

I'll have to check when I get home. I don't believe I went out and bought a 'special' tap. Or you could adust the nut on the joint and see which way it moves. I did not change anything back of the new shift rod; everything is stock.
Also , do those stock dohinkys that are on the shiftrod just "pop" on?
The hein joints?  The heim joint is once piece and cannot be taken apart. Correction - it can be taken apart but you'll never get it back together .  The heim joint screws into the shifter and a short piece of threaded rod conncets the heim joint and the shift rod.

I'm fond of the catch all phrase, the "whatchamacallit!".
I've embarrassed myself quite frequently when shopping for parts trying to explain to the parts guy "you know, the whatchamacallit that hooks onto the 'thing' that moves and stuff". |

Lets define dohinky. Webster dictionary says: "any part of a motorcycle in which the owner has no clue what the actual part is called " . There were a couple "other" meanings as well, but they didn't apply. Now back to the "dohinky" for which I was asking about.
