2004 star runs bad all of a sudden 7 Years, 7 Months ago
wondering if someone experienced this before. Jetted the bike stage two with dynojet kit. Ran GREAT for about three months then started to run bad after about a mile down the road. Sound like it was a cylinder missing. backfiring coming to light and stalling when clutch pulled in. Then when it warmed up ran ok. NOw its worse than ever running bad couple miles down the road now lots of stalling. took it to dealer and they charged me 150bucks and still exact same problem. dont want to take it back to them.Changed the oil and plugs this weekend still same problem. tried turning screw 5 turns out to richen it still same problem. leaned it to 3 screws out same problem. any ideas?

Sounds like the dreaded sticky valve. SEAFOAM is usually recommended, but only as a band aid. Not sure what years are most affected, but by the posts, 2004 and newer.

Bildo,
If you, (or the mechanic), followed the instructions for the jet kit, 'then', it's running way too rich. Got any 'specifics' on the carb jetting? That'll help us, to help you. 'Sounds' like you're going to have to go back in the carb. But first the SeaFoam. You can 'usually' pich that up at NAPA or O'Rileys. (Maybe even Auto-zone). That 'will' help, for now.

I really 'think' though, that you'll have to re-'tweak' the carb, to a leaner condition. (My opinion).

Mine's had a sticky valve since new.
Would never stick when at the dealer.
Now, with 34,000 miles on her, she's starting to stick more frequently.
SeaFoam seems to free it up for a while, but it returns.
Looks like I'll be pulling the heads soon

My 04 was doing the same thing started at about 6,000 miles...Seafoam, Marvel, Lucas, nothing working until I found the Techron.

Two bottles later, and the thing is running better than ever! Replaced the plugs also. 6,700 miles...

Mine did not show up on a compression check, blew 135 front and rear. I'll run the techron on occasion to keep it cleaned out.

I used 1/2 bottle per tank...

Spoke too soon...
Took her out afterwork for about 50 miles, and back to the same old thing....Missing and backfiring, and down to one cylinder most of the time.

Thinking about taking it to the local dealer to have a look at the rear head.
