Has anyone had any luck with the dealers fixing or even acknowledging the problem?

I had the same problems and symptoms with my '03, I even had flames shooting out the back of the bike one night. This my be too simple, but the problem went away when I changed my air filter.
That may seem odd, but sometimes the smallest things get overlooked.
Good luck.

Does everyone else who has had this problem have the backfire through the air filter? I can feel air being forced out around the air filter cover when the bike backfires. It happens when I try to open the throttle rapidly.

My 04, 2000 miles, has same pop thru carb, not everytime I start out but once and awhile, dealer had added Longshots and BAK, also have serious starting issue, runs great warm, he has it now trying to fix starting issue, I put a Max Flo kit on her same pop as with BAK, plugs do show rich, told him to drop main to 185dj from 195dj, did have bad cold running issue until I replaced pilot air with 40, stock was 37.5

backfire or pop though carb is not same problem as "sticky valve" problem or back cylinder not firing. thanks for all youre feedback.Still waiting for the dealer (1 week and counting) to tell me what is wrong with the bike.

Hey guys, I've got a '04RS; been in the shop for the last 3 1/2 weeks. Was in twice before that since 250 miles. Same problem. I found some great mechanics in Delafeild, WI at Arrowhead Motorsports. Fond du Lac mechanics suck; they gave nothing but a shrug and said it was fine. At Arrowhead so far they found:

1. leaking head gasket- Yamaha acknowledges it's caused by a too lean factory setting.

2. Leaking intake- same as above.

3. Sticking exhaust valves. They replaced the head and put the valves in themselves; ran fine for about 15 minutes, then the problem came back; sputtering and backfiring when warming up.

4. If they can get the idle up past 1100 rpm, bike runs in specs.

They have 6 days left before I call my lawyer- it will qualify for the lemon law then.

Got my bike back fri afternoon from dealer. they chased a possible carb problem all week. finally replaceing inigtion control module. BIke had scratches on it and Back cylinder headers chromme was crinkled from what may have been to much heat. Sat morning started out for a day of riding got to the first light pulled in the clutch the bike gasped stalled and sputtered on restart. warmed it up quickly after light and drove it the Harley Dealer in town and traded it in. DONE only 3700 miles on it.Didnt want to have to go through the pain of letting the dealer service it again. was worth only 8 grand for trade in. BY STAR seeya. I loved the look and the price was right but i needed more of a reliable ride. Ive talked to alot of RS owners who never had a problem with theirs so I must of had some bad luck.

Post edited by: bildo, at: 2004/10/18 22:47

Sad to hear that.

For anyone else with '04 and '05 (possibly older models too) check the delphi road star riders forum under "problems" I have posted info from my ordeal getting my problem fixed. It all came down to the head and factory springs. Yamaha needs more problems with the heads before they will issue a campaign bulletin.
