Buying a Road Star 3 Years, 11 Months ago
Recently I purchased a spanking-new 2008 Road Star, a definite upgrade from my first bike which was a V-Star 650.

My massive leap in displacement has thoroughly emasculated my best friend, who also owns a 650, so much so that he has scoured the Interwebs and has found a 2001 Roadie for himself.

Given that this is an older bike, with 59,000 miles on it, condition is sure to be an issue, and a thorough inspection will be necessary to nail down the fair value of the bike.

So, what should I look for? The obvious things like oil leaks and valve knock I'm aware of, but what are the subtle points to check? What could be hiding in that well-run motor that could rise up and bite my buddy in the ass in a few hundred miles?

Here's the bike in question:

Any advice is immensely appreciated.

You might want to get hold of a dealer and check that any recall for that bike have been done.

Can I call up any dealer with the VIN number, or do I need to find the dealer the service (if any) was performed at?

I would think you should be able to call any dealer and have them check.

You can also call Yamaha customer service with your VIN and they can tell you.

Motorcycle consumer news' used bike value guide lists that bike as worth 6,330 so the price sounds ok if it's in good shape. Just alittle more to add to the pot of info.

You might check your local banks also, I was in my bank today and they have three bikes posted on a bulletin board for sale they repo'd. There are some deals out there.
