SuperTech Filter Question 5 Years, 8 Months ago
I am a new Roadie owner (2004). I want to change my oil and have read that the SuperTech filter (from WalMart) is a great filter from reading some of threads, the larger reservoir apparently supplies a greater oil supply to the engine and help the bike run quieter.

In the threads I have read, it references the ST7317 filter. Does anyone know if that filter will work on on '04 Roadie (think the guy posting the thread mentioned he had an 02'? I went to WalMart & found the ST7317 but could not find a reference guide to ensure it is th right filter for my '04. Also, there seems to be a standard and a premium ST7317, anyone know or have any opinions about that?

Would appreciate any comments!
Cheers,
Rick "the bluezdawg" - Superior, Colorado

I am a new R* owner too but you asked for opinions .Mine is if the filter threads fit and the filter fits go for it no harm no foul .Using the swag method and my eyeballing at the most you will have about .42 quarts more than a stock filter, and I dont see how more oil would cut down on noise if the oil circulation system is sufficiently doing its job.....Coug .......Check this link out http://groups.msn.com/gl1800/general.msnw?action=get_message&mview=0&ID_Message=115353&LastModified=4675466675666844976

Cougar.. thanks for the post, I appreciate any feedback. I called the local Yamaha dealer and asked if there is a difference between the '02 and '04 as it pertains to oil filters, he said nope, same filter... with that said, I am going to give the ST7317 a try.

I use the Super-Tech filter on my 2005 Silverado. I believe the engine is the same as the 2004. Some fairly independent comparisons I've seen in the past rated the Super-Tech filter (made by Champion) as superior to all but a couple of others. Here's a link to the comparisons:

http://motorcycleinfo.calsci.com/FilterXRef.html

Here's a quote from the study:

Most modern motorcycles use the filter I call type [5], so this is the filter where I give you the most options. Personally, I always use Purolator Pure One PL14610s, which, along with the Mobil-1 M1-110 is clearly the best oil filter available. A small step down are the Bosch and SuperTech filters. These filters all have advanced filter media which is clearly superior to anything else on the market. The SuperTech filters, at $2 each, are a real steal. The AMSOil filters also have the advanced media, but they only have a very few square inches of it. Because of my fear that these can become clogged up too easily, I cannot recommend them. The remaining filters all have "normal" media, and have significantly poorer performance in capturing particles. I recommend you avoid Fram and Pennzoil filters.

DAMMIT...all Wal Mart had was a Fram, and I got it...they were out of the Super Tech

NOW I have a filter and TWO gallons of oil to return...finally went with Doc's suggestion and got the gold cap Mobil 1 (no friction modifiers), but not until after buying two other kinds...

Re:SuperTech Filter Question (thanks to all!) 5 Years, 8 Months ago
Thanks to all for the feedback. Got it figured out lastnight, filters are the same. Ended up using the SuperTech filter and Royal Purple 10w/50 synthetic. Went for a quick ride lastnight and for a while this morning, the bike really sounds great, much quieter. I was a bit disappointed how broken down the oil was that I drained beings I have only recently bought the bike from a dealer and have only put about 1k miles on!

This was the first time I ever changed oil on a bike. Kudos to the post on changing oil, it really helped, ended up being pretty straight forward. The only problem I had was, I chose to use a flimsy aluminum disposable cooking pan to drain the oil into and spilled oil on the garage floor as it collapsed while trying to pour the oil into a plastic gallon jug Duh! I spent more time cleaning up my mess than changing oil. Lesson learned! Again, I appreciate everyone's feedback, this is a great forum!
Cheers,

If you don't get oil stains on your garage floor you aren't doing it right.

One son is a freshman at Monarch, one just started 6th at LMS but plays the local midget football league and has his home games at Monarch. Don't see many R* around here so if I do I'll definitly ask if it's you. Nice guitar on the sig pic. Guitars and bikes, been my way of life for 35 years now.
