Backfired like a gun went off! 3 Years, 11 Months ago
I just went out for a ride at lunch and when I started the bike there was a backfire so loud that it really did sound like a gun shot. I let the bike warm up and went for a ride and everything seemed fine. I'm use to little poots from time to time when I shut the engine off, but I've never heard anything like this. Could that have been caused by running too rich? The bike sat for about 6 hours from the time I got to work and the time I went for a ride. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Did you twist the grip before you started it? When you parked it did you let it idle for a bit before you shut it down?

No I don't think I twisting the throttle. I let it idle for about 15-20 seconds before I shut it down.

I'm guessing it was collected fumes in the pipes that ignited. I wouldn't worry unless it makes a habit of doing that.

my 05 has done it once and not done it since. I was in my garage and it sounded like someone threw a M80 in the garage with me scared the fire out of me. I don't think you have anything to worry aboutunless it starts doing it frequently.

Yeah thats the sound!!! I'm glad to hear I'm not alone. I started it up after work and no problems.

It has been letting out a little backfire after shutting down latley, maybe the last 5 of 6 times. I've been shutting off the fuel and letting it idle for about 15-20 seconds but it still gives a little poot. Is that normal or a sign I'm rumming rich or something?

Thanks

How hot does the temperature get during the day? Warmer air makes your scoot a little richer. We hit 105 today. Yeah, I'm running a "little" rich now.

Today was the warmest day we have had for a while, it was 71, I know summer is comming but you couldn't tell from the weather around here. They even coined a new word Juneuary because its been so cold. We had the coldest 1st week of June since 1894.

Moondog, mine depends on how I ride as in How hot I let the bike get if I get the motor good and hot then stop and shut it down it will run for a couple of seconds maybe 2 revolutions of the motor. Completly normal.
It will usually only do it when the motor is really hot (stop and go heavy traffic).
It was 56 this morning and going to be about the same the rest of the week. I will tell you the bike likes it.
The roadie does some funky things sometimes like the issue you were talking about.

Ride Safe,
Jordan
