high beam 5 Years, 8 Months ago
This morning, on the way to the gym, I went to hit the high beam and got only dark. I pulled over, low beam works with passing lights on, high beam and passing light off when I switch up. My question: is this a bulb problem or a wiring problem? If it is a bulb, any suggestions for a replacement? If it is wiring, what am I needing to look for? In addition, is it a reasonable mod to keep the passing lights on when the high beam is switch on? How do I do that?

Suspect the bulb first, especially if it has been working previously.

I like the Sylvania White Star. It costs more than a regular bulb but it's much brighter and still uses the same wattage as the stock.

Doc, do you have a model number for the Sylvania WhiteStar bulb for our bikes?

I like the sylvania silver star H4ST. About $18 at any auto parts store. I leave my passing lamps and high beam on 24/7 except at night if I might blind oncoming traffic. It makes you A LOT more visable and you don't have anywhere near as many people pulling out in front of you. I tested the outcome myself by running for a week without the passing lamps on during the day and then a week with them on. Huge difference! My lamps came on the bike and aren't wired through the Hi / lo switch. I think( not positive) that there is a blue wire in the headlight bucket that is power on with the key. You could try running the lights off of that.

So, Musky, which wire do I splice into the blue one to get the passing lamps to stay on all the time? I'm not much of a "sparky" so please be as detailed as possible.

By the way, thanks for the light bulb tip. I'll try Wall Mart first; thinikng that will be cheaper then Auto Zone

I headed down to Georgia on the 7th to explore their western mountains. I'm making it a four day weekend.

As my lights were installed when I bought the bike I'm afraid I can't give you much solid detail. If you have a cheapo circut tester it would be easy to trace the power wire for the passing lamps. I am 90% sure the blue wire runs the front running lights and I would look for a red wire coming off the passing lamps for the power to hook to the blue wire. Sorry I can't give you more definite info but my bike is at home and I'm at work.

I didn't read this so it might help or might confuse you. That's what they usually do to me . Anyway this thread from the RSR has a link to the passing lamp PDF.

i put my light bar on earlier this season. there are 3 wires headed into your headlight. the blue is for the low beam. if you power your passing lamps off of it then they will turn off when you switch to the high beam. from what im told that is the legal way to wire it. im not sure what color is for the high beam, but if you tap into both hi and low then you will always be running both at the same time. probably not what you want to do. my recommendation would be to run it from the fuse box or put a fused switch straight off the battery. fuses are good just incase you ground out somehow, no fires.

Alllll Righty then. Forget what I said about the blue wire. Just read the installation PDF. It tells you what wires to use.

JMayton--

I added my passing lamps a few months back and still have the instruction sheet out in the garage...it gives you two choices of wires to tap into. One makes pass lamps on with low beams/off with high beams, one make pass lamps on with both. And it is one wire you tap into in the headlight. It also states that it depends on your local laws as to whether the passing lamps on all the time is legal or not.

I wired mine the latter way, and they come on when I turn the key. Better to be seen too much than too little. And I run the Silver Star bulbs in headlight and passing lamps. HINT: Wal Mart sells the H3s for the lamps, but doesn't usually sell the H4 for the headlight, but they DO sell the automotive Silver Stars, and the 9003 is identical to the H4. Run them in my Roadie and my Ford Escape...

I'll go to the garage in the morning when it's light (it's about 40 feet from the house and across 60 or so ant hills ), find the sheet, take a pic of it and post it for you.

Welcome to the greatest source ever for R* info!

I also have the 9003 as it's easier to find.
