Heat 3 Years, 11 Months ago
So I just bought a 99 Road Star and have some questions....

1) I live in Phoenix right now (it JUST cooled down to 106) and am regularly going to be riding on 110+ degrees. I know my sportbike doesn't like those temps and that is liquid cooled...anyone have any experience with how the road star handles the higher temps?

2) The first day of riding it I was heading on a trip to get used to it and the bike completely died...first the speedo and then the engine. Its in the shop now and they said they replaced the rectifier/regulator but the stator was in good shape...is that normal?

Bike has a hypercharger, a dynojey ignition module and supertrapp exhausts..all came with the bike...gotta tell ya it sounds MEAN with that exhaust. We're taking it to Sturgis in August so any issues for long distance you guys know about?

1.
Don't sit still any longer than you have to. Aircooled engines need moving air; moreso when it's hot.
If it doesn't have it now change to a fully synthetic oil. Dino oil will break down much faster in heat.

2.
Parts go bad but if your asking if the rec will die and not the stator then yes.

3.
Great long distance bikes if your butt can take it! If it has the stock seats you'll probably want a good aftermarket seat for long riding. Mustang, Corbin or Ultimate to name the better known ones.

AND...

Appreciate the welcome.

It actually already has an aftermarket seat (mustang) but anything is an improvement over my sportbike.

I have a Yamaha R6 sportbike which has treated me really well so I have quite a bit of brand loyalty in me right now. As for the heat, thats always an issue here in Phoenix, morning rush hour goes from 5am - noon and afternoon rush hour goes from noon - 7pm so its always a bit rough trying not to just sit there. Thanks for the advise though and I will be running full synthetic (sportbike gets synthetic anyways).
BTW...if anyone wants a review of the supertrapp exhaust, it sounds really cool but WOW is it loud.

yarr6...
Air cooled in Phoenix? Great reason to take "the road less traveled"... (especially if you can keep moving...)
Some one else here on the forum made the suggestion to slap a slab o' sheepskin on the seat for long rides... I gave it a shot a few times and it let me increase my "seat time" by double!

yarr6. make sure your idle is set correct also. too low will allow less oil flowing making more heat. But at those temps hot is hot.

over here in central spain during the summer it hits 45+ºc regually.

slow traffic Q´s and slow city driving can make the old girl start to sound a bit clattery (but not much) at those temps, but it´s a good excuse to overtake EVERYTHING

out on the road at 45+ºc sitting at around 85mph, she loves it and stays cool and quiet.

I use an Ortho-Deluxe seat pad, which allowed me to do two 651-mile days. That would have been impossible on the stock seat.

I use an Alaskan Leathers sheepskin pad with a memory foam pad underneath. Certainly much better than a bare stock seat. I've done over 500 miles a day on it a couple of times recently. No picnic but by putting in a couple of long days on each end of the trip it allowed me to have more time for short rides in the mountains where the weather was cool and the rides were beautiful.

I WAS NEEDING TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT THE SEAT BE FORE WE RIDE TO PANAMA CITY. I HAD SEEN A POST ABOUT MEAN CITY CYCLES AND HOW THEY UPDATE THE FACTORY SEAT IN SEVERAL DIFFERENT OPTIONS. THEY WORK ON AN APPOINTMENT BASIS AND WHEN I CALLED THEY SAID THE NEXT OPEN APPT WAS IN AUGUST. AFTER EXPLAINING MY TIME-LINE, THE OWNER ALLEN SAID THAT IF I COULD GET IT THERE IN A COUPLE OF DAYS HE WOULD SQUEEZE IT IN AND GET IT BACK TO ME ASAP. LONG STORY SHORT, I WAS WITHOUT MY SEAT FOR LESS THA A WEEK AND FOR $130.00 I HAVE A MUCH MORE COMFORTABLE SEAT AND THEY WERE ABLE TO MOVE ME BACK 1" AND DOWN 1" TO ACCOMODATE MY LONG LEGS. I LOVE IT. CAN'T SAY ENOUGH ABOUT THESE GUYS!! GREAT CRAFTSMANSHIP AND CUSTOMER SERVICE TOO. I'M A BELIEVER
