What was your setup when you had SVS? 5 Months, 1 Week ago
Yamaha keeps telling me that stock Roadstars do not get SVS. They keep blaming half my problem on the pipes. So my question to the group is this. IF you had SVS. What mods did you have if any when this happened to you?
I'm thinking of throwing this info together to submit to Yamaha so they quit saying we are creating the problem.. Here's what I'd like to know. Year of R*, Modifications, Miles on bike at time of SVS (Approx). Here's mine!

2007, HK 3" Big straights, AIS Removed(at the 8500 miles only), 800, 1600, 8500 miles.

If this has been done before let me know. No sense doing it twice!

Hey, I have an 06 roadstar 1700. 100% STOCK, new off the show room floor. Developed svs at about 3000 miles. Yamaha already knows who I am and my lawyer. It's been a long road but I hope my trip is almost over. I have not been able to ride for about a year now. Still making payments on this piece of... junk.

I bought my roadstar new in March 2007. When I had my stage 4 done at 480 miles they gave me my stock pistons back and already they had a thick coating of carbon. A yami mechanic said it usually isn't a question of if but when. Having said that my first roadstar had a hypercharge and road house duals on it. I traded it on my venture at 10,000 miles no problem and the guy that bought it rides it on long trips and has not reported any problems. I wonder if it is more due to not ever keeping it a higher speeds due to in town driving? In any event yamaha knows about the problem.

No .... it's a fundamental design flaw in the heads which is precipitate buy overly rich carb settings.

Good luck with your communications with Yamaha .... they are aware of a 'problem' but will not acknowledge it publicly.

You also need information on stock or modified carb.

I purchased my 06 R* new in March of 06, developed svs a few months later with a completly stock mechine. I used several treatments of Ring free at the shock level to correct, followed by a set of hotter plugs and regular use of a gas additive. I also have a yamaha service bulletin in pdf, that I found some where, that covers the back firing and carboned valve issue, took it to my dealer and they said they never knew about the bulletin, If you want it I can email it to you.

I never had SVS but here's a tech bulletin that Yami sent to all it's dealers. Proves that they know about it and are basically outlining way to blame it on the customer IMO. It can happen on a stock bike or one that's has mods.

Thanks Doc,
I didn't think of that part about the carb modifications. Dealer gave me a copy of the bulletin after the first time I had the SVS. 70% of my driving is expressway where I hit the limiter at least one on ramp per week. When I'm not on the expressway. I hardly ever get out of 4th gear! So that shot their "Lugging the engine to much" claim!

http://www.liquidcooledairpower.com/lc-topendheat.shtml This explains alot, read the section "sticky exhaust valves" This explains why yamaha dropped my oil to 3 and 1/2 quarts of oil! Now my rings are toast!
