Y.E.S. Program Should I? 5 Months ago
Well guys its a sad time. July 1st my warranty is dead. they want 768 dollars or so for 4 years of coverage. I havent had to take her to the shop for anything since I bought her and I cant decide what to do here. I hate to leave her all alone without some kind of safeguard. So I would be interested in hearing from those who have purchased the YES warranty and also those who think its just plain stupid to waste the money. Rapid replies appreciated cause I only have a few days to decide. Thanks for your input. Nick

First question should be - Do you have an authorized wrench you trust not to mess up your bike that you can take it to?

I bought the warranty last year when I bought the scoot LE. It's pretty restrictive as far as what it covers (basically the motor, if it hasn't been messed with). I'm not sure I'd do it again, to be honest. Someone else might have a different opinion.

Musky I have a guy thats been dads best friend for years that was trained by yamaha. He worked at the local dealership here for a number of years and was sent down south for training several times. He doesnt work for them anymore but he knows the bike and worked there in 07 when I bought it.

I also got the warrany when I bought my R*, however I got the warranty for no charge since I had a few friends in low places. But to be honest, I have never bought the warranty or added one down the road for that matter on any other bike in the past. Probably not much help, but thats my 2cents anyway.

Oh, and on another level, due to gas prices and such, I have found alot of certified mechanics that are doing work out of their garage for 50% less than the stealer would charge. You may want to ask around and see if you can find a few guy's you trust, this way you can also lean from them as well.

That doesn't mean Yami will cover the bill if he works on your bike. You should ask them.

Do you need an extended warranty? It's a crap shoot. Maybe, Maybe not.
My dealer actually steered me away from the YES plan when I bought my bike. I went with another plan he recommended that he said is very easy to work with. I was told that the YES plan is very restrictive and they often deny claims. Said the one I went with is OK with modifications and has yet to deny a claim for any of their customers. It does, however, have a $25 deductible for each repair. If memory serves me, I think it was around $700 for 48 months of coverage. If I can find my paperwork, I'll let you know the name of the company.

LE, what kind of miles have you put on your bike since you bought it? I have made a few minor changes and aftermarket stuff on my bike like the Baron's lowering kit, AIS removal, had a BAK for a while, and aftermarket exhaust. I had the SVS and the dealer took it right in under warranty and got it running good again. I've had my bike for 11 months and currently have 9,200 miles and it's in the shop right now for the neck bearings that the dealership has deamed as factory defect so now the neck bearings are being replaced and I should be getting a new front tire (hopefully, maybe prorated)becouse it cupped from the defected neck problem. All this under warranty. I did buy the extended plan when I purchased the bike new. ......Back in 2003 I purchased a 650VStar new, it was a lemon, warranty replaced the rearend and driveshaft assembly 5 different times in the one year warranty. I had 12,000 miles on it and traded it for a HD Sportster just to get rid of it when the warranty expired......................One thing to think about, if something major breaks such as a gear in the tranny or the motor blows, or just get a nasty oil leak on the head that warranty price will probably be the same or cheaper than one or two shop visits. Something to think about. If you put alot of miles on a bike something is going to break soon or later and this warranty is cheaper than HD warranty, I paid 1,200 for 3 years and ended up needing a new rectifier/regulater, wheel bearings, head gaskets, all within only 11,000 miles of ownership in one years time. The only thing I liked about the HD warranty was it covered wheels and tires, get a nail no sweat, they replaced it..........Another thing to consider is this warranty can be transfered if you sell, or if you decide you don't want the warranty no more they will pay you back the warranty, prorated of course.

I usually never ever buy extended warranties. I think if it were me I'd open a ING account and automatically deposit $16 a month away for the four years. At the end of 4 years instead of an expiring extended warranty you'll have $768.00 in your "repair" fund. Just keep it up as if you were still paying for the warranty and before long you'll have a nice bit for new goodies and such.

Special Warning though...I'd be really sure I did all my maintenance with the best materials I could find and ON TIME too.
