i pulled off the whole air box when i got back and while leaving the bike idle and there was no difference noticable from the engine on the rpms, before i drilled the air box there was a big difference doing the same test, so i would say that the engine is getting a good amount of air flow at idle at least.
I'll rephrase. The drilled stock won't have the same airflow as a BAK. The BAK won't have the same flow as a Kuryakyn. The Kury won't have the same flow as a Looney. So the settings for one might not be right on for the other.
I think, and I'm not positive on this, that going downhill you are engine braking which is not the same as a hard decel on level ground. If you still have dry roads go out and get it up to 65 or so in 3rd on a level road and let go of the throttle. That's what I'm talking about when I say hard decel.

ok musky i wasnt say'n anything about the differences with our air flows, what i trying to insinuate was that i have good air flow going into the engine.
dont worry yours is still better , and i found some fish tank hose we had around here and just tested, with the bike level the fuel level was even with the top of the bowl.
i also checked the accel pump screw it was 1.5 turns out it is now 1 turn, and im going for a little ride sence i can see the clouds rolling back in.

musky: for a minit i thought you want to be like pop rivet there.
just kidding pop rivet
i dont know untill doc gets involved if i should be getting fuel sucked up around the needle at 1/8th throttle or not, before the accel. pump even sprays.
but the bike didn't backfire at all when i went to go and get some barbque around 7 miles from the house but it did start choking when the sky opened up and i got soaked again.
thats one way to make shur the bike got washed at the house!!!

Post edited by: dozer, at: 2006/09/23 18:48

First of all, you have to realize that by drilling the stock intake and having
a ported manifold with stock pipes, your engine isn't breathing like it should. If you are going to allow more air to enter, then it needs to breath on thru the whole engine and needs to be let out faster. The popping on hard decel is usually caused by a too lean condition. But with a stock drilled air box and ported intake manifold, and a 170 main, you are richening your motor up due to it not being able to breath. also, you AIS system will cause your popping as well. Until you install an aftermarket intake (I'm kinda impartial to the Barons BAK), and pipes, and getting an AIS removal kit (which has to be installed with most aftermarket pipes due to fitment of the pipes), then you are just going to have to live with the popping for now. Also, with the aftermarket accessories, you will have more power than you do now and better throttle response as well as better mileage. Good luck man.

One more thing....these bikes are cold blooded and tempermental with the change in temperatures. The cooler it is outside, the more leaner your bike will run. And vise versa with warmer weather.

You said it didnt start backfiring until it rained ....perhaps the drilled holes are allowing access of some rain water "moisture"to the carb.............Coug

Just got back to town.
I think most guys have covered what I would have said.
You have to remember that the carb circuits overlap so rich on one will affect another. For STEVE'S 2005 SILVERADO with ported manifold, drilled stock air box, gutted pipes, ais gone, I think the 170 mukuni main jet is probably too rich. I'd step down to a 167.5 or even a 165 may work.
Leave the barons needle 4th clip standard washer location and PMS at 2.75. I am also assuming that you have the stock pilot.
Backfiring is usually caused by exhaust leak but an incorrectly tuned carb also contributes. If the backfires hard then it's too rich - the unburned fuel/air mix is being ignited inside the hot pipes. If it backfires (more like a pop) lower down in the revs then turn the PMS out 1/4 turn.
Don't forget ... anytime you mod the bike you introduce potential problems. For example, AIS removal leads to leaking through the nipple on the carb.
