Just do a search for oil. You'll get lots of reading.

I made the switch to Mobil 1 V Twin 20-50. Got it from Auto Zone. Really quieted the motor down, and the bike has run well in various temps. Hope this helps!!

same here as gjcarving - switched to mobil 1 vtwin oil from auto zone and it made a big difference in the engine noise and seems to shift smoother too - used a wix oil filter and put in 4 quarts and she was ready to go....

I'm an Amsoil dealer, I could not wait to get mine broke in and get some Amsoil in there! Being Air cooled in this summer heat and possibly getting stuck in traffic makes me nervous! I'd certainly go Synthetic something, Amsoil. Mobile one, Royal Purple are all good choices, Obviously I go Amsoil because I am a dealer, But it test results done by independent lab Mobile One most always comes in second. But the Amsoil Oil Filter is hard to beat and available in Chrome for our bike! All I know is the dealer charged me $200 to change the oil with what I think is Junky oil. Use a synthetic of your choice that specifically shows it meets the API Service as specked out in the Owners Manuel. Be sure to use a great filter. You can learn a lot by doing a search on the net. Break it in before you use synthetic. MC

Ditto on the amsoil.(10w40 works good in mine). But I like the super-tec filter from Wal-mart due to it being a little longer and the filter media is capped with metal and not cardboard like some.
