For normal riding I go to 2nd at 20-25, 3rd at 40-45, 4th at 50-55 and never use 5th unless I'm doing 60-65 or more on the expressway. I do most of riding on secondary roads and spend most of the time in 4th between 45 and 55. During the course of a ride I'll usually run past those shift points a couple of times to keep the carbon out. You can easily get to 50 in 2nd, 80 in 3rd and well over a 100 in 4th! As already said, these bikes don't like to be lugged! The owner's manual is sooooo wrong on shift points that it's embarrassing. I started out using Yamaha's recommendations and quickly changed after talking to a bunch of riders. Even my dealer said the shift points were WAY to low. Good luck.

I'd have to agree with pday and Musky...I am currently in the final cure stages of the dreaded (and all too common)sticky valve syndrome in the rear cylinder. I filled up the other day with REGULAR gas, dumped in a hefty amount of Marvel Mystery Oil, and have been riding the piss out of it since! I live only about 3 miles from work, but I went an extra few miles the long way, doing 60 the whole way...in 2nd gear, thankyouverymuch! Blew a bunch of crap out of the pipes...and now she idles SOOO much better...smooth! Well, as smooth as a bigass thumping v-twin can be, I guess. If you're out there, Doc, thanks again for the MMO suggestion--it works!

Oh...does having the MMO in the gas affect mileage at all? Just didn't know if I should burn the whole tank of MMO mix out before trying to establish an MPG baseline!

So, Flatpockets---ride 'er like ya stole her! And smile while you do it!

You guys ask tough questions.

Yes .... but (always a but ) the variability in mileage would be more reflective of your riding style and would be greater than the effect of the small amount of MMO in the tank.
