Hey Mr. C -

Next time you have the air filter off the bike could you take a picture of the carb with the filter off? I'd like to see the flange you built and just how it's set up. Thanks.

Well, I just got finished doing Mr. C's air filter mod and I am very pleased. It came out pretty much as I expected, based on all the info I was able to gather here on the thread, so, thanks to everyone.

I still have to remove/sand, paint the bracket and buy some hose to move my PCV venting, but otherwise, done.

I used a piece of 1/8" aluminum plate, the original mounting grommets, a couple of metric allen bolts with washers pushed through from the inside of the filter and nylon nuts on the bracket side. Pushing the allen bolts from the inside made tightening a lot easier since all I had to do was get an allen wrench in there for tightening.

I made one alteration that I thought came out nice. I copied the notch on the idle cable mounting bracket down below onto my filter mounting bracket just behind the filter under the tank. So, I can still get to it easily for adjustment, it's not in the way, it snaps loose just like it did before and everything is cleaned up down below.

I take some pics when I'm done with everything to post.

My only gripe is that K&N sent me a filter with their logo slapped on upside down in front. I'll end up finding something to put over it to personalize her anyway, but still, it looks goofy for now.

Has anyone looked into what chroming their bracket would cost? I know it wouldn't be cheap, but it would look good.

I liked the way the K&N filter looked but I had a problem in one of the New Mexico rain storms and the bike died. I replaced it with a K&N filter that fit in the stock air box and got better results.

I'm glad my mod worked out for you. I'm in the process of making a custom emblem for the face right now and I will post picks soon. My K&N is only slightly turned, but people make comments sometimes, so I finally decided to do something about it.

Hey Para! Nice to meet yet another NM R* rider.

That must have been a heck of a storm! I know sometimes we get downpours.

I have had the stock box poormans BAK mod with a K&N filter and the airflow is pretty good, but the look just doesn't grab me. I was looking to do something different anyway, so when I saw this mod and the cost of the filter, it fit.

I was able to do the whole job for under $63. The fabrication took me a little longer than I expected, but then, I was being a little anal about it. The look is great and it tucks up under the tank real close to the carb, so, I'm hoping there'll be no problems. K&N makes a pre-filter cap for them to keep water and debris out also.

I'll post if I have any issues.

P.S. Para, post a pic.

Keep us posted! I haven't had a chance to even look into it yet, so any previous experiences sure help. I saw your previous post for a custom emblem and I've been curious about what material you'll put it on and how you plan to apply/mount it.

Great project and fun too. The bracket was challenging in some ways. It has to look good where it's seen but needs to dip back for the back cylider mount. That angle gave me room to cut the slot for the idle cable mount. I'll send in pics of it later.

I cut the bracken from a aluminium sign. Made a template out of cardboard. The sign was easy to cut and file as needed. It fit the existing air box mounts.

Well, I said I would post a pic of my bracket mod for the idle cable, so, here you go.

The cable snaps up into the bracket in the same way it did on the stock bracket down below. Very convenient I think.

Forgive my bracket looking unfinished, it is. I still need to sand and paint it. If anyone's interested in seeing pics of it when I go to refinish it, let me know.

Ratl.

I painted the bracket black, I like the way it sort of disapears..
