Drag pipes and AIS fix on my 08 R* pict/sound clip 2 Months, 4 Weeks ago
I posted in another thread but the title said nothing about 08..
I got some speedstar drag pipes with 02 sensors for my 08 Roadie.. Fitting was pretty hard by myself trying to line everything up.. The exhaust bracket it came with replaces the stocker and you have to take off the rear brake line and connect it to the new bracket.. Not hard BUT the bolts that hold the new bracket to the frame were messed up.. They sent metric bolts with standard nuts. it took me ever to figure this out so I just went to orchard and got new nuts and it worked out. My cousin came today and I slapped them on pretty easy with the extra hands holding the pipe.. Im very happy with the look and quality.. Other than the small mishap of wrong nuts its a very nice system.

I took the bike out for about 50 mile ride this morning and wow what a difference in sound and it really opened the power up.. Much smoother than stock and they sound real nice when you crack the throttle. Right off the bat tho I heard popping and within a block I was like "I have to fix that" We went on the ride and I dealt with the popping but when I got home I started tinkering with things.. I have a AIS removal kit but for an 07 and I read here or on R* riders that it didnt work. So I did some testing on my own, I disconnected the plugs in the front and fired it up and it started but there was the pop still. So next I went to the cylinders and followed the aluminum tubes back to the front of the bike.. They plug into a couple 1/2" rubber tubes.. I unplugged them and started the bike, I could feel some air in them so I thought well thats gotta be it its like an air leak itself .. This whole AIS thing is ridiculous.. So I took the old exhaust bolts and pushed them into the rubber tubes with the big side in first the threaded end was to small.. I took the bike for a mile ride and no more popping at all and ran much smoother.. Thats it simple fix for the 08 AIS.. Ya the crap on the bike is still there but until I see a kit that works for the 08 this is a very quick fix and it works great.. Here are some pictures..

Here are a couple small sound clip of the stock and then new Speedstar drag pipes.. I did these with my helmet cam so ..

You park your R* in the same garage as an HD.

Thanks for the pics and the info. Should be handy for other folks with 08's.

Yeah for the AIS thing I was talking to a tech at my local shop on Saturday and asked him about the AIS.. well, that finned thing on the front (with the 2 plugs) is your regulator/rectifier, and so that'd explain if it ran like crap after you unplugged them (mine did, at idle only cause it felt wrong) Anyway, that tube you plugged is the one they're talking about, I think what I might do once I'm done all my trips for the year is I'll pull that r/r down and then rip the whole AIS out.. the removal kit I got still has the covers for the ports in the cylinders, so I can try and clean it up and shed a bit of weight in the process. This'll probably be in at least a month or two though, so if it goes well I'll post good news, if it doesn't you probably just won't hear about anything.

I think AIS works via the vacuum created when the exhaust ports open anyway. So when the exhaust port opens, the vacuum created pulls air puffs in via the tubes through the AIS system. All a removal kit does is give you 2 plugs to plug the holes in the block. You should be able to rip the rest of that crap off. Just be sure you plug any vacuum tubes you find, either at the tube or at the block/head where they plug in. I think there is also a vacuum line that goes into the intake or head that you can cap and be OK also.

Great info... thank you. I also have an 08 R* which I am considering replacing the stock pipes.By the way, I like your bike with the black saddlebags. Is that an upgrade? my saddlebags are the same color as the bike.

Good write-up.

I've got the 07 AIS kit and will be installing tomorrow. Removing all of the unrequired components.

I'll post the results.

WHOA! The AIS solution really works! I bought slip ons and a Power Commander but still had pops and backfiring! I read the AIS fix and can't believe the improvement! Thank you so much!

We're gonna need a special area in the tech forum just for the 08 mods pretty soon.
