JIS screwdrivers 2 Months, 3 Weeks ago
|
|
I've been reading about the stripped float bowl Philips heads screws for some time now on the forum (and others), and found we've been using the wrong kind of drivers. The screwdrivers we should be using are JIS (Japanese Industrial Standard) drivers, which are not made to intentionally strip the head of the screw (thereby saving the screw's threads instead), as the Philips was originally made to do. Our toolkits contain the JIS driver bits.
I found a good set of drivers at
http://www.rjrcooltools.com/shop_item_detail.cfm?subcat_ID=65
and bought a set of Vessel stubbies and a couple of longer-shank drivers. And, boy, do they work great. They lock into the slots and don't even try to twist out. Another website that sells them is
http://www.ikaswebshop.com/hojisscset4d.html
I didn't know if this was common knowledge, but I don't remember reading anything about this in the forum.

Are these things like "left handed" hammers and brooms?

yeah that is right PAPA. The Vessel drivers are at a slightly different angle to ours. In fact they actually work better on all Phillips screws. We use them exclusivly in the maintenance dept at the Japanese auto plant I work in. Funny I never really made this connection though.

I have three large Phillips screwdrivers in my toolbox, each bought from a different bargin bin in a different hardware store, and each with slightly different angles on the tip. If I find a screw thats hard to move, I try all three on it to find which one has the least slop before trying to turn it.
My stragegy is to buy screwdrivers out of the bargin bin at hardware stores rather than pre-packaged sets because I think they overcharge for them. That way I can afford a dozen of all different shapes and sizes for the price of 3 Snap-Ons ...
