Pulled mine off and ran it for a short trip one night. Got up next morning, house egged, for sale signs in yard, truck tires flat. Cleaned up mess and put a set of V&H short shots on. You'll loose back pressure and have higher tendency to backfire. Hell mine sounded like a Howitzer going off on decel. A tad louder than stage three.

If you do that without doing something else you will produce a machine that won't get out of its own way and will have the whole neighborhood out to get you! The engine needs back pressure or it won't develop the power it should. They have what are called "torque cones" that are installed in the pipes right where they attach to the cylinder. These torque cones provide the back pressure to make the engine run right. I worked on a Shovelhead Harley recently that had pipes that were about 2 feet long. The front pipe was bent to the rear and the rear pipe was bent forward such that the front pipe curved right around the points cover, and the two pipes were side by side looking straight down. When it was started whatever dirt was under the pipes got blown all over. If it wasn't on pavement you would think that you were in a desert sandstorm!

I ran mine sans mufflers when I put my Cobra Power Pro on. (guy sent it to me without the mounting bracket so I had to stop the install with just the headers on.) It was thunderously loud. My son could hear me all the way around the neighborhood. Really insane how loud it got. It felt plenty fast, though. I couldn't really feel any reduced torque, but then I wasn't really gettin' on it too much.

Be aware of your local codes not only for noise but also for spark arrest. Here in Ontario we have both issues to deal with. The baffels do both jobs. No matter what pipe is on the bike it must have the baffels in. SO a stright open pipe would never be allowed.
