Just food for thought. Mine does the same thing when I start her up with the petcock in the off position.

I have to shut my petcock off after a hard ride to keep the gas from overflowing and my garage from smelling like a fuel spill scene.

If I don't open up the petcock and let the gas flow through before I turn the key, the fuel pump works overtime trying to get what little fuel it can through.

Thanks for the reply underdog. You shouldn't have to turn the petcock off after a ride. You may want to get that figured out before you catch the garage on fire.
