Yep the oem wrench sucks my nut is all chewed up need to replace it. I have had to resot to channel locks to do it. I had thought when I do replace it about doing what you did only cutting a slot in the boxed portion so you can slide it over the shaft to get it on the nut. Not real sure what yours looks like from you description.
