Clutch cable broke on me! 2 Years, 6 Months ago
So, I'm heading out to work this morning. Pull out of the garage, turn the gas on, pull the choke out a little and crank her up. All good.

I pull the clutch in, shift into first and boom, she just jumps away, jerking with the thump of the pistons. Whoa! I'm headed strait for my truck and no clutch response. I grab the front brake only because both of my feet were still down when she took off. That's not working. She's skidding forward, so I turn the wheel right. No effect since the wheel is locked up. Finally, the engine dies and I come to a stop about 18 inches from my truck. Whew!

It all took only a few seconds, but it etched itself in my memory pretty good. I kept thinking, 'What if I had been sitting at a light or stopped behind someone? Or, worse.

I took a look at the cable and found that it had worn at the elbow down by the case. The constant pulling of it back and forth rubbed it down.

I lube my cables, so it was somewhat of a surprise to me, but that's just one more thing to keep an eye on.

Check that part of you cable when you're doing your inspections guys and gals. I'm not sure how long we should expect to get out of one, but I'll be checking it a lot more often now. Ride a safe ride.

Ratl.

I was down at Myrtle Beach several years ago and just as we were hitting heavy bike week traffic heading out for The Rats Hole my clutch cable on my old 72 Honda CB750 rigid rat-bobber broke just where it goes into the barrel at the lever.

I just grabbed some tools out of my tool bag and took the clutch lever off and turned the adjuster all the way in and pulled the cable through the hole and grabbed it with some vice grips and twisted the adjuster out until it tightened the grips up. All I had to do was hold the grips in place and rock them back to pull the cable. It wasn't condusive to speed shifting but that night and all 300 some miles back home I made it fine.

Come to think of it that was the week the picture in my avatar was took.

How many miles is a clutch cable good for, generally? How many miles did you have on yours, Ratl?
I'm asking cause I'm close to 12,000 miles.

i havent heard of many cables breaking at the motor side...the lever side snaps because the ferule isnt lubed, when i lubed my cables it never occurred to me to grease up the actual ferule, but supposedly it puts a lot of stress on the cable if the ball end doesnt rotate freely, if lubed and greased at the ends and as long as nothing is rubbing id say theyd go for much more miles than you have

Right now I'm at about 20,000. My last bike had 48,000 on the original cable and never gave me a lick of trouble, but then it didn't have an elbow bend anywhere along its track.

I'll be tracking pretty often from now on, I can tell you that.

Ratl.
