I had mine break down to 4 strands when I finally noticed that it was shifting like a Harley when it makes that clunking sound...I was in the middle of riding in Colorado when that happen. My group and I kept riding from dealer to dealer until I found one to replace it. Actually the Yamaha dealer in Cortez, CO had and Old School mechanic that rebrazed my clutch cable better then new... it lasted me longer then the original. Course, from then on I keep and extra clutch cable in my bags. They will break over time.

I'm glad to get this kind of information out. If you know what to check for, you can avoid the problems before they take you out.

Anybody else have to adjust their clutch cable after every 100-200 miles?
Or, is it just me?

broke mine one cold morning in sturgis on the way to work. Luckily it was only a block away, last stop sign. I limped to work, pulled the cable off and hey it was sturgis, so I went right to barnett's booth and they custom made me one for $85 bucks. Nice braided cable.

Dang bilsd1818, ya just don't get much luckier than that.
If I send ya the money would you buy some lottery tickets for me?
My brother was driving tractor/trailer coast to coast and blew a steering tire on his way across a bridge at about 75 mph, he fought and twisted and turned and kept it straight enough and out of the creek and when he finally came to a stop the dust cleared and he found himself most of the way into the parking lot of a truck repair shop. He walked in, borrowed the bathroom and got a new tire .. LOL
Now that was real lucky.

On a new bike I would think you would get some initial strech for a while, never had a new one so I can't say.... but no, you should not have to mess with it very often...

Last year I had a 09 v-star and it seemed to need ajustments every couple hundred miles also. My R had 1100 mi on it when I got it. It also seemed the same until I was over 2000 mi now adjustment is fine. I haven't had to mess with it since. Must just be stretch.

"Or, is it just me?"
I have never had that problem with any of my bikes, HD, Triumph, Honda, Yamaha, none, or a car or truck for that matter, unless, the clutch was worn.
However, have you recently changed oil, or put in an additive? (I am assuming these are wet clutches while I wait for my manual) Some oils will smooth friction plates. One friend built a CB750 and used some hi-hype aftermarket synthetic and regardless of adjustment, the clutch would bind in a few miles until, under advisement, he changed his oil to factory Honda 4 stroke motorcycle oil and readjusted the clutch basket cam after a trip around the block while hot. He hasn't had another problem in 5,000 plus miles.
Have you adjusted the clutch cam itself at the basket recently?
Is one of your riding buddies a real peckerhead prankster that could be turning it while you are in the bathroom or something? ..
(No really, one of my friends spent several minutes trying to kickstart his bike at a gas stop once because the prankster of the group hit his kill switch on the stock handlebar controls while we were inside getting drinks and wizzing.)
It could also be worn clutch springs or friction plates, ever since my Trident with the inboard (split the cases to get to it) Borg Warner dry clutch, pulling a clutch basket from a side cover has always seemed easy and breeazy. It really isn't that hard, unless you pull the plates out of the basket and shuffle them with your eyes closed ..
I hope something turns up other than while on the road.
Max
I'll ask my friend to quiz his son the Yammy mech about the issue to see if he has run into a common cause.
