Breathing and ignition mods do work! 2 Years, 6 Months ago
Since I bought my R* 2 years ago with 3,100 miles on it, I've gone to a universal K&N filter, a set of Santee tapered tip mufflered pipes, and rejetted the carb. I installed a Dyna 3000, set the advance to 34 degrees before, and replaced the 33 tooth front pulley with a Barons 31 tooth. Then I put a SpeedoHealer in to recalibrate the speedo/odd.

I didn't really know if it had resulted in much of a performance gain or not. I could feel some difference.

My good friend bought an '02 R* a week after I got mine (because he liked mine so much! ), and on Sunday we engaged in 2 illegal "contests of acceleration" on US Rt 1 where we live in MA. His remains box stock.

I absolutely smoked him both times. The first time, he had a bit of a head start, but I caught and passed him well within the first eighth of a mile. The second time, we started together, and I just walked away from him... and he readily admitted mine was considerably quicker.

And gas mileage? We took a 200 mile trip up to and around the huge Quabbin Resevoir in MA and his uncalibrated odo gave him a 44 mpg number... I took on 3.654 gals for a SpeedoHealer corrected 194 miles, and got 53 mpg!!!

Do I love my *? Oh yeh!!!

Your buddy's bike is a 1600, isn't yours a 1700?

Hi Questcap,
What did the 31 pulley do to your RPM around 80 mph ? How about around 60 in 5th ? Does it want to run there ?

JVC,

I don't have a tach, so I don't know what the RPM difference might be... if switching to a 31 tooth results in a 6.1% difference, ala the SpeedoHealer on-line calibration calculator, then I would say it's turning 6.1% more r's?

Also, 60 in 5th is absolutely no problem whatsoever. It seems quite content there.

I have an 05 with a barons BAK, V&H short shots, and the Barons (mikuni) jet kit. I'm getting betwen 33-35 mpg. (what am I doing wrong). I noticed a real difference on the highway as far as throttle grip position. Instead of 1/2 to 3/4 without the BAK, it cruises arround 1/3 to 1/2.

It would almost certainly be your carb setup. You must be putting more fuel in than it can efficiently use. Of course, your riding style can greatly effect it, too.

Some fine tuning should get you alot more.

I used the K&N jet kit, but's made for them by someone else... and K&N just rebrands it.

I installed strictly according to the instructions... no other tampering and tuning, and just got lucky. It ran great right out of the box, without another tweek. I'm not going to mess with it.

I've thought about porting the intake manifold too, but it's running so good now, honestly, I'm afraid I'll mess it up if I do anything else.

i have access to a 5 gas, but I'm not sure how to use it for this application. I also have a dynojet kit, with a coupon for a free dyno. Maybe I should get off my butt and use it. I do have a lead hand, so I'm sure that has something to do with it.
