No more knock. 3 Years, 6 Months ago
As I have said before I purchased 3 years extended warranty, but could get my dealer to do nothing about the knock, said it was normal.I bought a bottle of Marvel Mystery oil dumped in about a quarter of it and went for a ride(a very hard ride.)Decided I was going to kill it or cure it.On a straight road hit 95-100 for about 30 miles with no let up.As of this morning on the way to work I no longer hear the knock, this tells me it must have been a sticking valve.Hope I don't have to do it again thats to fast for this old man.

Thanks Old Man!

I just printed your post and will keep it under the seat on the bike. If I ever get pulled over, I'll explain about the knock and tell them this is the only proven cure for it. I don't have the knock, but he won't know that.

BTW, I'm really happy for you. I have read for years about this thing but have never experienced it. Some guys have sold their bikes because of it. Now you can really enjoy this amazing bike.

Rocky

Re:No more knock. 3 Years, 6 Months ago
I don't know if I have the knock or not. I just ran about a month with the stock pipes back on (sold my 3" Dual Sider Burners and am waiting for my Roadhouse Dooleys) and hear things I had not over the pipes before. Is it knock or just big old V-twin pistons banging around, I just do not know. Be that as it may, I do run a can or Techron or Marvel in my last tank right before oil changes and think your tip may be a solid one.

I do know once the Dooleys go on, a lot of those weird little noises will go away again.

Spoke with Yami dealer mechanic/(owners son) about the knock in my bike. A knock a deaf man could hear. He took the bike for a ride and concluded that he didn't hear any thing that wasn't normal. Sounds like the language is rehearsed. Then said I should contact Yamaha and was more than willing to give me their number. Hmmmm. Next step Yamaha. Anybody out there having problems contact me. I am developing a list. Also he recommended using 93 octane gas in bike as it burns better.

Exactly why I hate dealers. "Buy the YES package" Why? So I can let some nitiwt that knows about a third of what I know work on my bike? No thanks.

So on a bike with 8.3/1 compression, he suggests 93 octane? Really now? This thing will proabably combust on beer. Running higher octane in this bike will do just about zip and may actually run worse. After some serious mods, you may need to run higher octane, but not stock. I get the best performance and gas milage with regular.

DO NOT RUN HIGH OCTANE FUEL in your Roadstar UNLESS you have installed high compression pistons.

Stock Roadstars run great on the lowest octane pump gas...and high octane will be detrimental to the stock engines.

Good luck and ride safe!

Today I was told by my wrench that using oil with friction inhibitors such Marvel Mystery Oil can cause clutch slipage....anyone have problems?

Any motorcycle with a wet clutch should not use any engine oil with friction "inhibitors" or friction "modifiers".

The use of engine lubricants with friction modifiers in motorcycles with wet clutches will lead to clutch slippage.

I do not know specifically about Marvel Mystery Oil and what is in it...maybe it's a "mystery"!

There are numerous oils available without friction modifiers and/or specifically designed for wet clutch motorcycles both natural and synthetic.

Good luck and ride safe!

Post edited by: wchenss, at: 2005/05/21 04:58

Marvel Mystery Oil will ruin your clutch pretty quick. Never use any type of "energy conserving" oils and most additives for oil are not a good idea in motorcycles either.
