Wiring Ape Hangers 2 Years, 2 Months ago
|
|
Ok, a quick question before I get into this to far. I'm putting on 16 inch apes and of course the wiring has to be exstended. I see both my right side and left side wiring are going into the back of my head lamp. I havn't pulled it yet to see what the hell is going on in there, but obviously they must ty into the main group that runs under the gas tank and back. I guess I have a question here somewhere. Are there plugs in the back of the head lamp? Or do I leave 4" outside the lamp and solder the new wires coming thru my apes to these. Or any help on the proper way to do this? Clifford I will be giving you a call for cables very soon.
Later,
Mac

there are 3 quick disconnect plugs inside the headlight bucket that you need to unclip, cut the wires a few inches from the plugs and add your extensions.Any other questions feel free to ask,I just did mine a few weeks ago.Are you running you wires internally?

Roadymac--
18 gauge wire, and remember to stagger the solders so they aren't all in one big clump, especially if you plan on pulling them through the bars...
Good luck--it's worth it!

I thought id be smart and innovative and put all new wire in, solder the wire couple inches off of the plug in the headlamp and then right to the switches on the bars. I figured then if they was a problem(and there usually is when i wire things) after i pulled the wire through the bar i would know for sure that it wasnt a connection in the bar. I DO NOT recommend this because i basically half melted the switch on one side a busted a clip on the other. Dealership quoted me $250 perside for complete switch assembly because they do not sell them in pieces only as a complete box. SO, I jimmy rigged them back together and they work but im sure anyday now ill hit my signal switch and it will fall apart inside and I'll be on my way to yamaha for a new set of switches.
APES ROCK!

RoadHammer:
If your's is a 2008, let me know if you need a set in chrome. I have a spare set on my Beach Bars that I probably won't be going back to. Never touched them internally. Only a couple hundred miles on them.
$250+SH for both sides.

If you're wiring internal you should go for the 1.5" bars. The Burly bars couldn't be easier to work with. I second staggering the splices. Be sure to add at least 14" to the electrical even with 10+ control cables. I had to redo mine after adding only 12".

Ya, internally. Man if I didn't know better I'd think I was looking at my bike when I get it done. Your bike looks good

If you are going to run your wires inside the bars make sure you check where the wires enter the bars, under the mirror and master cylinder, make sure that the opening does not have any sharp edges. Use a dremmel or small round file to clean things up and that all the sharp edges are gone. This will make it much easier to pull the wires in and less likely to tear some insulation as you are tugging and cussing.
Good luck.
