Neutral sw. o-ring 1 Year, 10 Months ago
Ok, so I have to take all this stuff off to get to the o-ring, side covers, pipes, battery, front pulley, transfer case, oil filler tube, 2 chrome oil tubes, . Yeah, a whole bunch of stuff to replace a 5 dollar o-ring, geeze, what in the world was Yamaha thinking to get to the 2nd screw of the neutral sw.?

Now I came across this on the NHTSA site, "Additional labor saving tips for the transmission recall"
From the jist of it, I won't have to break the gasket seal of the transfer case and deal with cleaning all that material off... that's good. Just wondering if the pulley and the stay (parts fiche #54) would have to come off, or is there room to slide it out completely, or slide out the transfer case enough to get to that darn 2nd screw,
From the looks of it on the parts fiche, looks kind of big and would get caught up on the frame somewhere. ok, I erred on the link, soooo....

So does this mean we 1600 owners have another issue to pay attention to? Or is this a sporadic problem? A little history please. Thanks.

Sorry, should have made it a bit clearer. to get to the neutral sw. o-ring. there is a 2nd screw that is behind the transfer case. normally you have to take the transfer case apart, or so I thought till I came upon this tip, which was under some info for the tranny recall. As far as an oil leak at the neutral sw, there have been only a handful that I know of, and I believe they were all high mileage bikes, mine started in the mid 90k range. If you start seeing oil dripping down by the 2 chrome oil tubes, it is a good chance it is not the o-rings on those tubes, if you look from under the bike, if you look at the rear chrome tube, behind it is a small gap which is the transfer case against the engine case, oil coming from that gap is probably from the neutral switch, I say probably because there are only 2 oil seals behind the transfer case, 1 is an oil seal from the transmission shaft, the middle driven gear is on this shaft, and the other is the o-ring for the neutral switch. But I think that if oil is leaking on the transmission oil seal it would leak in the transfer case and mix with the gear oil, but not the o-ring. the o-ring is on the engine case side and only sits behind the transfer case.

As far as common problems, there are a few, but when it comes to a dealer, there are few common problems that he might have heard of, so to a dealer, there are really no common issue that there are a lot of. Keep in mind, there are 8k members on here, 1 dealer might only have 100 roadies in the entire yr to work on, maybe even fewer, it's not unheard of, for a dealer to say he's never seen a bike with SVS as an example. I'm also on a forum with 50k roadie owners, so I do hear about a lot of common issues, but I have to look at the big picture, 20k roadies built per yr, even with all that have same problems, it's still a very low percentage with some of the issues, less than 1%, so 99% are good running bikes.

Erbman you hit one of my pet peeves right on the head. Truth is very little ever goes wrong with the Roadie. It's our perception due to our involvement that there are certain problems that affect many people when in fact it's a very small percentage. I'm sure there is SVS but I'm also sure it's not many of us or some of us have it and don't know it! Same with wild mileage numbers and so on.

Many of us are hypersensitive to things that aren't there and others blissfully unaware of things that are.

I just take a common sense approach. I've also done a lot of reading on other forums as well. I think in the past 5 yrs, I have read well over 5k posts dealing with carb issues alone. And on another note, human nature, when nothing is wrong, everyone is silent. But when something goes wrong with a product, and any product, the sh-t hits the fan, people want to scream and shout and tell everyone what a piece of junk it is, and never to buy it.
