Neutral switch 1 Year, 9 Months ago
Just a tip for you all, since I just went thru this repair. Come to find the lower screw for the neutral sw. had backed out 2 threads worth, and developed an oil leak, also because of it being loose on the bottom screw, the top screw on the neutral sw cover caused the plastic dog ear of the sw (where the screw goes thru)to crack and fall apart.

Any way, what I'm getting at here.

You can get to the switch without taking the transfer case apart, you won't have to get a new gasket nor clean the old gasket off. In fact, you don't have to pull the tranfer case out all the way either.

Remove front pully and block (piece behind pulley)
Keep oil pan underneath here, more gear oil is gonna drip out
remove chrome oil tubes (2)
remove chrome transfer case cover
remove middle driven gear 36mm nut and lock washer
I managed to pull the case out just enough that the splines of the gear still meshed, yes, it will leave a small gap of approx 1 inch behind the case to get to the screw, but it is possible. my screw came out by hand, that's how loose it was. I so happen to have one of those small thin ratchet type tools, comes with screwdriver tips, so I took an allen head bit, though it won't stay put since it does not have a way to stay in ratchet, my friend Dennis took a bit of plastic bag, to make it snug and hold the bit in place, sorry I didn't take pics

I printed your post and stuck it in my service manual. Thanks.

I get the chills every time I read about one of these leaking, wondering when mine will. I though well I'll just put a big glob of RTV silicone on it but that probably wouldn't work.

It's rare they leak, I think in 5.5yrs on the rsr forum, I've seen no more than a handful. I was just surprised that the screw behind the transfer case was that backed out. Good thing I have small hands, like I mentioned, only had maybe an inch of space, but was able to get it out by hand. Just a few things left to do, battery, pipes, fluids. ....then a much awaited ride

Interesting....Couple weeks ago I was riding with some folks that are partial to HD...one guy rode off leaving the gas station with his kickstand down. I caught up to him before he got out onto the street, but....why would disable that switch? His bike was nearly new...

Harley does not use ANY safty switches! Push the starter button with it in gear and the bike will lurch forward. Put it in gear with the stand down and it does not quit, and you can ride it.

Man,At the very least Harley should have a safety sw on the kickstand, that can kill or mame you in a heartbeat .

As for no safety sw on clutch,if the bike is in gear thats a bit to handle because as soon as you hit the starter sw you know the bikes in gear so you should have ample time to back off the starter sw before the bike fires up.

But even thats not a good sw to omit either.

Maybe HD figure if your stat stupid to fire the bike up in gear and or leave the kickstand down you should not be rinind thier bike in the 1st place.

Well even the best riders can have a bad brain fart kinda day and forget something, these day's it's more likely about money then anything else,it seem's Harley doesnt car about that much to include $10-20 worth or wire & 2 switches for our safety which ia am surprised isnt mandated by US Gov vehicle safety standards.
