Float Level Update 1 Year, 4 Months ago
|
|
I don't know if this has been posted before but since I've seen some recent confusion about it here goes.
Working part time at a Yamaha dealership one of the things I do is read through the Technical update manuals looking for things that might help the Techs. As I was reading through the list of older updates I ran across a reference to a 1600 Road Star float level update in the 2000 update manual. As luck would have it we still had the 2000 manual.
I looked it up and there it was - The 2-3 mm below the bowl seam in the original service manual was incorrect and should have read 4-5 mm's ABOVE the float bowl seam. The update page had a drawing like in the original service manual showing the incorrect spec and another drawing showing how the correct measurement would look.
Even though the 1700 wasn't around at the time, as it turns out the float level spec for the 1600 and 1700 is officially exactly the same.
Hope this clears up the confusion I've seen over the years - did for me.
Edit: And that's the spec with the carb mounted on the bike.

If your dealer happens to have the 2000 Tech Update manual around, which they should if they've been around long enough, the correction I described is on page 4-40.

Thanks for the Info. I will be fine tuning my 1700 before long and will adjust the jetting and while i am at it I will double check the float bowl level.
Thanks Again

There's no telling how much is out there with the incorrect spec. I wish I had known about it years ago as it would have saved me some frustration. As luck would have it I finally said the heck with it and set mine at 5 mm's above some time ago. Runs great, starts cold better and is smoother.

+1. I'm sure more than a few of us have been frustrated by this issue.

Hey Scott, thanks for posting this.
Could you clarify a couple of points for me?
I take it the bike must me upright (on a bikestand) when doing this? ....and...
Are you comparing it to the breather side of the float bowl seam?
Thanks. AT

Yes, it has to be sitting upright and level. And no, all Road Star float level readings are taken at the manifold (inboard) side of the bowl seam.
