fork oil 12 Months ago
Had the stealer change my fork oil. After a 340mi trip to Louisville I found both forks leaking oil from the top of the tubes.I was ready to KILL!!After venting to the shop owner he agreed to fix the leaking and any other damage his shop tech might have caused. He said the O rings may be leaking.I hope thats it,not crossthreaded fork caps. Also the tech put 15W oil in,says thats the standard now.I know guys put in 10W so is 15W ok?Since the forks are comming apart again I`ve opted to put in Progessive springs. What weight oil should I have put in?5,10,or 15W?

Re:fork oil 12 Months ago
This is why noone touches my bike but me.

As for the 15W...this is the first I've heard of someone using it. Most around here seem happy with 10W...including myself.

Hope they get you fixed up right.

Edit: BTW...there are some specific instructions required to properly install the fork springs with respect to fork oil volume and spacer length. After screwing up once with just the fork oil change are you sure you want to entrust the progressive spring install to them. I don't think I would....just sayin'

Re:fork oil 12 Months ago
seams as most are very happy with 7 or 10wt. stock in the roadie is 5wt. 15wt would be fine im sure but pretty firm of a ride. i dunno if you like what you felt with the 15wt i say go for it, if you felt like it was to firm drop it down to 7 or 10. i have 7wt in mine but next time i will try 10wt just to see if i like it more or not. however i like the 7wt too, much better than 5wt imo

Re:fork oil 12 Months ago
since both are leaking from the top, i wonder if the dealership just over filled both tubes.
15w at standard? I don't think so.
I'm happy with redline suspension oil 10wt with my progressive springs.

Re:fork oil 12 Months ago
I have only seen 15W reccomended by Race Tech for straight rate springs and emulators. If the damping circuit is remaining the same, everyone goes with 10W, and everyone seems happy. ATF is about 7W when it is new, but ATF is not grade-stabilized like fork oil. That's why you get that watery black stew out of the forks the first time. The metering holes in the damping rod are sized based on the viscocity of fresh fluid, as the fluid breaks down and falls out of viscocity grade, the damping rate decreases, so the front gets spongy, because the rate of compression is no longer being metered the same. Thinner fluid flows faster, and you end up with pretty much an un-damped, contained springer front end.

I'd say 10W, and tell the shop foreman to watch the clowns working on the bike or do it himself. These tatooed little freaks with the booger jewelry that don't know how a hat is to be worn don't touch my bike.

I got tired of that crap quick. I do my own.

Re:fork oil 12 Months ago
Yami factory srv'c man states 5w fork oil for R*.

With that said some guys run 7w and many run 10wt to firm up fork dampening action a bit to get rid of the mushyness they have with lighetr 5w oil.

But 15w is 3x heavier then yami rec's ,wonder how much of that 3x heavier fork oil they put, like srcewed that up too.

When you have the shop chk out fork cap seals since they used wrong 15w oil have remove the 15w and have then install the correct amount of fork oil in either 7w or 10w,thats up to you.

Most guys get away with out replacing o rings seals on fork caps when doing fork oil change and both yours are leaking?

I am inclined to think they not only used 3x thicker oil then yami rec's but also used way too much fork oil when refilling the fork tubes and the excess oil is being forced past oil seals in form caps.

Tell the shop that the Yami factory srv'c for R* states 18.7oz of oil goe's into each fork tube and that 5W is stock but that you would like either 7w or 10w oil, thats up to you.

If it were my bike i'd go with 10w like already suggested.

good luck.

Scott

I hear you on the trust issue, but I made sure the owner knew I wasn`t happy and they wouldn`t get my bisness again if they screw up again.I have other ways of dealing with them if that happens.I`m on my way over there now to verify the work thus far.BTW thanks for the info on oil weight.I`m going with 10w.Thanks to everyone for the help..

When I had my bike at the shop for the motor rebuild/big bore install, I had them put in the Eibach 1000 lb spring, and progressive front springs. They used 15 wt fork oil.

Bike handles like a champ. I usually ride 2 up with my wife (I weigh 260, she weighs 130) and we just love how smooth the ride is now.
