Under tank l.e.d. lights. 5 Years, 10 Months ago
Hello everyone, I installed led lights (blue) on the bike the other day and it came out great. I purchased the lights from Advance Discount Auto store. The set came with 8 light pods. Each line has 4 pods connected to it, spaced about 14" apart. I have a blkcherry 2005 RS and lights reflect an almost purple hugh from the red in the paint. It looks way cool I must say. Install was very easy. I removed the tank and side panels and ran the pods along the top frame tube and held them in place with plasic wire ties. I was also able to install one pod under the carb and one under the right side panel. No wires are visable and you can't tell that they are there untill they are on. I also purchased an inline fuse holder with a packet of 15amp fuses, and a small two way toggle switch. The negative wires on the lights are connected to the negative battery post and the inline fuse is connected to the positive post. The toggle switch is then connected to the inline fuse and the positive ends from the lights are connected to the toggle switch. All ends are then crimped in electrical wire caps and then wrapped with electrical blk tape. I made my own mounting plate out of an old license plate. It is about 1 1/4" X 2". I drilled a 1/2" hole for the toggle switch and a 3/8" hole to mount on the left side tank bolt. The lights can be turned on with just one flick of the switch and since it is mounted just under the seat at the tank mount bolt it is very trick. And now for the best part. This cost under $26.00.........WOOHOOOOO!!!!!!! The lights cost $14.97 and the switch and inline fuse, plus an extra pack of fuses cost $9 and change. The bike looks great at night and I have received some very good compliments. The way the lights reflect off the chrome is just amazing!!!! By the way my nieghbor was at our local shop getting his tire repaired for his Suzuki and a guy was in there having the Kuryachin spider lights installed and told him about my lights and the guy just about crapped his pants. Hope this info is useful to anyone who wants to add this type of lighting to there bike........Ride on and Ride safe my Brothers.......Gary

Post edited by: King#1, at: 2006/07/08 21:26

LED's are awsome ! i dont understand the expence that some people are paying for light kits.
i set up a LED light kit like the one you did on your bike i might have 50 bucks in it , and i think i have to many lights ! there are kits out there that they want 200-300 for a set up , and thay dont have anything more than what i did , i just dont understand why some one would spend so much for somthing that is not that hard to put together your self its not even like they are saving somthing with the more expencive sets , you did good and i know mine looks awsome LED;s very cool

Wirkinman,
Beauty of a Bike my man. How are you doing the chrome trim on the fender? Is it the flexible tubing with the self adhesive? I had some of that to trim the tank on my old Shadow. I put it on a fews years ago, but have no idea if it held up over time.

I am no expert but I think your fuse is way to big LED's take very little amps.I think you can use a micro fuse. I had the dealer put Led running lights on the back of my bike he wired it into the passing lamps which were hooked to my head lights. Anyway it all ran off a 15amp fuse all was fine until the passing lamp switch shorted out, it blew the fuse but the led's got fried because way before the 15 amp fuse blows the led's fry I put in a 1/4 amp fuse and the leds work fine. I wonder if that fuse might be to big I was going to keep putting in smaller and smaller fuses until it blew then you know you got the right size but I got lazy. But 15amp fuse for leds I truly believe is way to big.

I also have blue leds installed under my tank and agree they look way cool at night. Found someone on eBay that sells different sized kits with everything you need, some with just a set of single leds, some with pods. I started small with a 10 led kit that included the inline 3amp fuse and switch for 20 bucks.

Ended up mounting them directly to the underside of the tank so I could aim them down the side of the engine. Also have a couple on the frame under the seat pointing at the rear cynlinder. Switch is mounted out of sight between the tank and the seat and bullet connectors are used to connect the tank lights to the switch and battery.

Very happy with the results and the price! Glad I didn't go with the more expensive brand name kit.

Post edited by: Barker919, at: 2007/04/17 13:54

I agree that the expense some people go through to put LED's on their bike is outrageous- Here in GA at the Milledgeville Thunder Rally they were charging anywhere from $250-$400 for a very basic set installed. I have an '06 R* that is candy apple red and I ordered sealed LED pods from ledtronics on line and did my bike with red LED's for under $40-looks great at night with the red paint.
