How to get the pipes off!? 5 Years, 9 Months ago
My new Road Star is one week old. WOW - Moved up from a 750
Shadow. I found this site before I bought it, and after the first ride decided I needed to do the stock exhaust mod to add some meat to the pipes.

I have a Silverado. Took off the saddle bag, took off the pasenger floorboard.
Now how do I get the allen head bolts that hold on the mounting plate to the frame at the tip ends of the exhaust? I have the right size allen wrench, but there is no room to get in there and apply enough torgue to get the bolts loose.

Per the instrutions:

It is best to perform the following procedures with the muffler set removed from the header pipe and taken off of the bike.

I would be glad to do this if someone could tell me how!?

Thanks

Welcome to the forum WhiteStar

First you are dealing with Yamahas industrial strenth super dooper loctite. I cut off a piece of my allen wrench, stuck it in the end of a socket, and that did the trick. If you have access to a pencil torch to heat up the heads of the bolts to loosen up the loctite it wouldn't hurt but i didn't use one.

Congratz on the new bike. I also am the owner of a new R* - mine is only 11 days old. Changing out the exhaust is a must right off the bat. I changed mine out the day after I brought her home. If the bolts you are refering to is where the exhaust mounting plate connects to the mounting bracket that is attached to the frame of the bike the best thing to do is place the longer end of the allen wrench into the bolt leaving the shorter end pointing out. Now use something to attach to the short end of the allen wrench to use as a lever to apply enough force to break the bolts free. I believe that they have lock-tite on them so they are a bit tricky to get out. I used a screwdriver that I have that has interchangable tips - basically I took off the tip leaving the hole exposed and put the short end of the allen wrench into that. That was enough leverage to break them lose on my bike. Then it is just small turns and taking your time. If you want to remove the bolts that attach the mounting bracket to the frame, I used a hex rachet (8mm I think) and a breaker bar with a bit of WD-40. Careful not to pull up to hard on stuck bolts as you could tip the bike over.

I hope this helps!

Grace and Peace,
Brent

I used the correct allen wrench but used a piece of spare metal pipe I had laying around in order to get enough torque on it. Once the locktite gave, I could do it by hand.

Congrats on the new bike. I have had mine for almost a year now and I wouldn't have anything else. I put Samson slash cut Shoguns on mine. No baffles. Not only are they the best looking pipes in the world (my opinion) and holy crap are they loud. A buddy of mine said he could hear me from over a mile away. Gotta love it!!!!!!!

Go buy a metric allen bit socket and with a 3/8 rachet and extension you wont bust your knuckles and you can then listen to them screech all the way out....in fact buy a set of allen bit sockets...real handy on a bike that is loaded with
allen head bolts
PS
If you dont get good downward pressure on the allen screws as you turn them
...you may round them suckers out....then you can hear yourself screech

Post edited by: Pop Rivet, at: 2006/08/31 08:27

Gotta go with Pop Rivet on the Allen Socket thing. That is how I did mine and they have proved to be invaluable tool as the modifications to the Roadie have progressed

Post edited by: JJsNet, at: 2006/08/31 07:34

Just an info only. The best way to get Loctited (is that a word?) nuts and bolts out is to heat them. Depending on the type of loctite used, you may need to heat them up to around 500 degrees. I use a Craftsman heat gun and those loctited bolts come right out without rounding the heads.

If you're trying to get them off to do the Stage 1 mod you can do it with them on the bike. I didn't want to bother taking them off and other than having to sit/lay on the garage floor it wasn't really a big deal to do it on the bike. I'd imagine you can even do Stage 2 on the bike but Stage 3 will definitely require you takin them off.
