Good stuff, and good Idea BigBoy.

We just made this topic sticky, which means it will stay at the top of the topic listings in the Tech Tips forum folder to make it easy for folks to find.

Thanks!

Yer Welcome! I just kept thinking that it would have saved me a lot of time if I had known some of these basics on our bikes.

Save that bubble wrap when ever you come across it, it's great for storing your extra chrome parts
be sure to have a good tool kit under your seat or in your bags
put some ride-on in your tires, I haven't had to test it yet, but folks say it works good
keep an extra headlight bulb taped to the inside of the headlight bucket and some extra fuses in the fuse box cover

If at all possible, get a motorcycle/atv lift! It makes almost everything easier to do and safer too.

Assign a storage container to be just for your R* stuff. Not tools, but anything you add/remove from your bike, you'll probably want to find again later and it will be sooo much easier later. (I wont need that. Right.)

Get together a basic supplimental toolkit to carry with you all the time. You'll care when you need it.

If you hear a rattle, FIND IT NOW!

Keep records of anything you do to your bike. Write it down!

Ride as if every car on the road is trying to kill you. We want you back here. (Just because I'm paranoid, it doesn't mean noone is out to get me.)

Be proactive about Maintenance. Keeping a bike up to snuff (tires, oil , tire pressure , even washing and waxing) maintenance wise Will prevent most failures.

I personally write all my maintenance stuff down in the back of my owners manual. So the guy who buys my traded in bikes gets a first hand look at the stuff I've done to it (tire, oil , Valve adjustments, dates & mileage).

Read the Tech tips, print them out so you can have a copy while working on your bike.

Then when you get lost or stumped, jump online and ASK before you screw something up.

Do a search on your topic and see what pops up, almost everything under the sun has been discussed. But never be afraid to ask.

When using a heat gun or hair dryer for removing decals and badges, use the least amount of heat possible, even if it makes the job take a little longer. The clear coat on our bikes is very soft, and too much heat will cause the clear coat to develop a milky-looking haze.

A tip that I've used from here for a long time is when you print out an instruction from the tech section, put it in a plastic sleeve so it don't get greasy and wrinkled. I print both sides so I also save on paper.
