Hello!

I say go for it! You can't go wrong with a Roadie, although just so you know FI's are somewhat new here as Roadies were all Carb before 08'. Have you ever ridden even though you haven't owned a bike???

People have bought the Roadie as their first bike with no problems so if that's what you want go for it. Find a MSF course near you and take it. And an empty parking lot is a great place to practice in.

Howdy Dan! Get the bike YOU want, not what others think you should get.

Dude, I live in Charlotte, not to far from you. First, congrats on taking the safety class. You have a lot of great destinations to enjoy and discover in your area. I used to ride through Shelby and Kings Mountain all of the time. This is my second bike, previously, after taking the class I bought an 04' Suzuki Volusha. Personally, I think, unless someone has good riding skills, the Roadstar is alot of bike. Just my personal opinion.

The great thing about the bike is, you can seriously customize the bike. Yamaha of Gastonia (they're now closed) did a lot of work on my bike. Welcome and enjoy!
