Turn petcock off after every ride???? 3 Months, 1 Week ago
New to Road Star, bought used 05 1700 with 2500 km.

Previous owner advised to turn off petcock after every ride. I have not done this on previous bikes. I understand there is a risk of gas pouring into motor, is this a serious risk???

Bike came with DD straight pipes and it is to loud for my wife and neighbors so going back to stock. May have to modify them if they are too quiet!!

Would appreciate comments on whether to turn off petcocks.

Yes, it's a good idea to turn the fuel off after every ride.

The point of the handle should face straight forward, the length of it parallel to the ground.

You won't like the stock mufflers. They're too quiet... and heavy!

I found it's even a good idea to turn it off and let it idle a bit to kind of relieve the fuel pressure from the pump. I was having an issue with it burping gas about 2 minutes after shut down and since I do that, no more. I imagine things are different on a FI model. And he's right about the stock exhaust. Do the stage one at least. MC

The MSF folks advised shutting off the petcock. I never do it because I ALWAYS forget to turn in back on before I ride. Then, well you know. But, I also don't have the gas puking problems some have mentioned. Personal preference I think. If your bike needs it, do it. If not I don't think it will hurt the bike.

My 2 cents,

M7

I've been having a gas leak when it is very hot (here in Florida) it seems to be coming from the fuel pump. The dealer suggested that i turn the pitcock off when it is in the sun for long periods of time. Since then haven't had any leaks.

I use to turn mine off but now it doesn't shut off anyway need to rebuild the petcock seals. probably because of off and on every time. it doesn't leek gas either so must not hurt anything. now I don't bother shutting it off at all.
