I will start this out: I am an active duty Sailor joined in Jan 2001, still in training when Sept 11 happened. Been on submarines since 2003... I would have retired at age 36 but got my back injured and had my spine fused. Couldn't lift my 75 lb tool box so they put me out. I loved my job (jet engine mechanic) and had great pride in what I was doing and why. We surveyed firing positions for the howitzers; everything from towed 105mm to the 8 inch self-propelled guns. Ya want to feel the ground shake? Be in the middle of a battery (6 guns) of 8 inch howitzers when they do a "fire for effect". It's awesome!!! Semper Fi! Now I have the pleasure of working with the outstanding young men and women who are joining the armed forces today. It was easy for me, there was a draft and you didn't have a choice. These outstanding young men and women today don't have to go into the military, they are volunteering....and volunteering in a time of war. Our only child a Son just turned 18 enlisted 03 OCT 2008 US NAVY and got Sub's. I spent 20 yr's helping to track them. How weard.
