In responce to recalls, there is another item which is prone to failure and thats the gear oil pump drive. I understand they were made of the automotive grade nylon or some plastic composite. Is this something which is hard to access? ie. splitting the cases? I had asumed it was just a matter of removing a sidecase on the motor to access..... Can an owner do this particular 'oil pump fix' without too much tearing in to the internals?

Looking through tech articles here in the toolbar, it appears that the shaft-gear is either dirty or steel, making my asumption incorrect? Still there are enough failures to warrant a change or upgrade. Correct...???

What year is your bike? I think the gear issue was only through sometime in the '01 year. I know my '01 had the old design, but no more.

The old oil pump gear was thinner and prone to break but not enough of them to warrant a recall. If you own a pre mid 2002 then it best to change it out if you go into the engine clutch area.

To determine if the recall was done on your bike check for a dot above the serial number (means its done). If you don't have one then contact the dealer with your serial number and her will verify in the Yamaha database.
