I see from pictures taken there the place has changed a lot since the mid-80s when i was there. Love me some CH-62 going from Morongo Valley <--> Palm Springs... either way is a blast on a motorcycle, especially with the elevation drop/rise.
I was hit from behind on my '87 GSX-R1100, at CH-62 and Mojave Ranch Road... right in front of the CHP Shop. They arrested him about 7 miles down the road... with flat tires and grinding the wheels... he turned into the mall there and never saw me or the flashing lights.
I was thrown into the deep sand, with full leathers. Deep sand and leathers are a good combo. I stood up and the CHP was surprised. He said I was lucky... I was sore and bruised for weeks. Bike didn't fare to well... forks were ripped off the bike. Body and frame ground all to hen in a hand-basket. Broken wheels... you name it, I don't think a single part went unscathed. I stopped riding anything without a full cage for 20+ years.
My wife decided to get a VStar 650... and that got me back into riding, I've got a 2001 Roadstar Silverado, love the bike. They grow on you. Wife now has a VStar 1100.
Semper Fi!
