The white plug in the article is controlled by the ignition module.Using this connector keeps the lights off until the motor is running.This keeps the battery from being taxed by the current draw from the lamps when starting.
You might try disconnecting the running lamps from the point they are connected and make sure every thing else is working correctly.Isolating that circuit will make it easier to test.
