synthetic oil 7 Months, 3 Weeks ago
Hello, I am new here and also new to the Yamaha Roadstar, have looked through the forum and really happy with all the help offered on this site. Thanks

I have a new 2007 Roadstar and want to switch to synthetic I talked to a AMSOIL dealer who says I can use 10w40 motorcycle oil in crankcase and transfer case. Has anyone used this in the transfer case? Doesn't sound right to me but I am here to learn.

Don't talk to that Amsoil guy anymore. You're right. You want a 75/90 GL4 or GL5 that is backwards compatible to GL4. I use Royal Purple Max Gear.

Thanks Musky, I am not much of a mechanic but thought his idea was crazy.

Well the Amsoil guy may be right

Harley Syn3 is used in the primary .....transmission.... and engine that is why it is called SYN 3... "3" being for 3 uses....

Syn 3 Oil

I guess the new synthetics can be used in the transfer cases of the Harley....high shear... wear etc properties...

So I would suspect the same for Yamaha...

in the primary there is just a chain running around two sprockets ...if the oil is good for tranny gears then it should be good here too...

However I am with Musky...a good gear oil makes better sense...

But maybe technology is just one step ahead of us old school

Can't believe LIBB was told it was OK to use the same engine oil in the Transfer case!

All the dealers in my area are selling the MAXIMA product line, so I think it's good probably quality stuff.

I went to the dealer looking for GL4 Gear Oil, and was told Maxima, High performance Gear Lubricant, Premium Blend, 80w90 would be OK for my Road* even though it was rated as "GL-5". Do you agree? Is this backwards compatible like your Royal Purple, and is this weight oil OK to use? If not please advise, and I'll return it.

Thanks,

WALDO

Hmmm . . . interesting; perhaps it is OK to use that syn3 stuff you spoke of, but I'd still rather play it safe and use bona fide "Gear Oil" in the xfer case like you said. Thanks for bringing that to my attention though Pop Rivet.

Well it would be interesting to see what Yamaha has to say cause they dont show any primary gear oil on their website...

Maybe like I said ....the wear properties of syn oil is better than thick dino gear oil?? and better

The Syn 3... probably is Amsoil... or Mobil 1... not some Harley BS that it was formulated for HD.....
