My 2000 Road* came with Vance & Hines Longshots. Since I have had the bike I have set off a few car alarms. As for bothering my neighbors, I'll let you know tomorrow, I'm going to take it to work for the first time and I leave at 5am. I dont beleive in the saying "Loud pipes saves Lifes". I drove a fire engine for many years and some people didn't here or see that big loud fire engine and I doubt they they are going to see or here my rodie. Maybe back in the day, but now with cell phones load car audio systems and they way cars are sound proofed cagers usualy dont here them. "Always assume they don't see or here you".

Let's just say I like my Duals, but not for the volume. I'm also not ever going to be depending on my pipes to save my tail from the cagers.

I have Vance&Hines Longshots on my 03' and I like the way my bike sounds. Not to loud or over powering. Hey remember when we used to put playing cards on our fender supports with clothespins for our bicycles? Sounded way coooool!

I think loud pipes have the potential to save lives, but that doesn't justify obscenely loud pipes.

I've got a Stage 1 mod on my stock pipes, and to me, they're the perfect amount of LOUD. Before I did it, I couldn't much hear my own engine... not good. Compared to just about any aftermarket pipe, they're pretty quiet, but everything's relative. On a group ride a couple months ago, a guy on a Gold Wing complained about having to ride behind me because my bike was so loud. Jeez.

There are, of course, lots of people out there with pipes loud enough to hurt my ears, and I do mean actual, physical pain. To me, that's just plain selfish and inconsiderate, and when someone hurts me, my overwhelming knee-jerk reaction is to want to hurt them back. Anyway... I usually figure the situation is due to one of the following:

1. Loud Pipes Guy doesn't know that he's hurting others.
2. Loud Pipes Guy doesn't care that he's hurting others.
3. Loud Pipes Guy is half deaf, probably because of his loud pipes.

My dad made me take those playing cards and clothespins off my bicycle (a Schwinn Traveler with a two speed pedal shifter, a great paper route bike). He warned me that it would wear down the spokes. I believed him... at the time.

I'm happy with my Stage 1 mod. Did it in a simple way though, without removing the cones. I've got a good, steady drilling hand, just went through them. Have pics is you're curious.

Loud pipes save lives? Uhh, not in my opinio... and a couple of times loud pipes on bikes startled me so badly that I almost veered into the other lane of traffic to avoid what I thought was going to run into me...

I had to laugh with this one fast Bob... loud pipes don't and then thy do....

But seriously, like onther person commented;I would not want to trust my life to a loud set of mufflers!
