Help with Powdercoating/ Paint! 4 Months, 1 Week ago
I am looking to black out a lot of my bike and I have a few questions.
1- How do I go about painting chrome pieces on my bike?

2- Is powder coating the best option for forks, handlebars, rims, etc? or should I go with paint.

3- How hard is it going to be to take my wheels, forks, internally wired ape hangers, engine guards, passing lamps and tail lights off... should I leave that to a professional.

4- Am I opening a can full of worms? Any problems you guys have run into that I should be aware of would really help.

Thank you!

Cody

There's a little info on the internet about painting chrome, might start there. I think it's a sin

It's really not that hard to disassemble your bike. You should get a Clymer's manual or download a manual from the internet. If you do a search here on the forum, you can find the site where you can the get the manual for your bike. I can't remember the site off the top of my head. I'm sure someone will chime in.
One thing you can do it take pics or if you have a video camera, video tape yourself removing parts, so you can watch it if you can't put things back together. In regards to chrome vs powdercoating?? I'm obviously a supporter for powdercoating as you can see from my bike! But I also like chrome too...so it's whatever you prefer.

Thanks again bigflip. I have the site saved to my favorites on my computer at work so I will check that out. That's a really good idea on video taping. I will definitely do that! Did you have any problems powder coating your pieces of chrome? I'm wondering if i should use buffer pads on it or just have them sand blasted.

Cprows, contact the powder coater first. Sometimes they include the prep work. Make sure they guarantee there work as well. I had my (2) sets of wheels done and my forks for $300, BUT it took a month to get my parts. I pays to talk to them first if you dont mind waiting.
