fuel tank leak 1 Year, 1 Month ago

ok got a question,what is the hole from top to bottom for in the center of the fuel tank. only when i fill up my tank it leak under the tank somewhere. so i took it off today to take a look, i say nothing but on top i could see where gas had been on top of this hole, thinking about filling it with something.

yes not gas cap. i can see it comimg from left side under the tank and the motor is hot so i don't fill it up anymore, low light come on put 3 gal in not leak, more than that leak, sucks because i'm ready to ride to carolina before it get to hot.

oh forgot to say i did drop bike 5 years ago, crash bar and fender only damage.

Take the tank off and inspect it, check the screws that hold the petcock on. If I remember correctly that hole in the center goes nowhere
|

I'm not 100% sure I follow you, but if I understand you correctly, it could be one of two things, On top of the tank, in the front, just under the big chrome dash cover, is a tank breather tube with a hose connected to it. It's possible the breather hose came loose. Either that or if it's only when the bike is hot, could it be your carb is boiling?
Best thing to do is remove the tank and get a good look at everything under there. It's probably not the tank, but there are a bunch of fuel lines, breather hoses and if you haven't removed the AIS, more possible lines to leak.

Remove the tank, set it on your work bench and fill it up slowly until it starts leaking. Then fix it. Then go riding. I'm not sure what hole you are talking about but my tank only has a hole to put gas in, a vent tube, and a gas valve (petcock) any other holes shouldn't be there especially if they are open directly to the inside of the tank.  |

The hole you are referring to is just a drain hole in case water gets under the chrome dash. It has a means of escape instead of laying in the depression where the gauges sit.
It's unlikely this has anything to do with your fuel leak. Others have given you good advice on places to look so far.
When it comes to diagnosing the problem, I have to agree with davej...empty the tank, take it off and put it on a bench, then refill it until you see the source of the leak...assuming it is the tank and not your carb puking or something like that. On the bench it will be much easier to see than on the bike.

ok guys thank for all your input, i put air in the tank and listen for a leak and the drain hole is where i heard the leak, so i jb the hole close, put air on the tank , not leak, this morning fill the tank up rode to work inspected it no leak. i think when i drop the bike 4 years ago that was the weak point of the tank.thinking should i get the smallest dill bit put small hole for draining, put i don't ride in rain much.

I wanted to post in here..
I have this same issue it just started last Tuesday.
I'm filling up to go to work and gas is spewing all over the engine.
So Friday i took it all apart and it was not any gas lines.
It was this issue.
I totally missed it when i took the tank off. But then i knew it had to be the tank after a while.. So i just tilted the tank and gas every where..
Here is my status:
1> i have never dropped my bike. I have always had a motorcycle and i have dropped others. But no this one.
2> i have driven in some cold weather this year. Due to gas prices.
So.. maybe i need to vent my tank? I have a 2000 original Roady.
I figure the pressure was too much for this draining seam?
