I changed mine at 1000 miles when i did my break in oil change. Its best to get that oil out asap, because of metal fragments in there during break in period. roadhog1

Well just letting some of you know.. I had a hard time finding GL-4 oil almost every store I went to had Valvoline 80w-90 GL-5, MT-1 oil.. It does not say anything about being backward compatible so I emailed them and a valvoline tech sent me this

"It is not backwards compatible, but the Valvoline Gear Oils meet both GL-4 and GL-5 specifications. The GL-5 doesn't supercede the GL-4, but Valvoline uses a non-active sulfate formula to be able to meet both specifications."
So this should be fine and its just about everywhere you go.

more than fine...same stuff you use in the lower units of outboard motors
and I/O drives

and so is synthetic 50 weight motorcycle engine oil...which is even more readily available

syn 3 oil is used in the transmission/ engine/and transfer case of HD motorcycles...and Yamaha now recommends using their syn oil in the transfer case...

a 20w-50 syn motorcycle oil has the same viscosity(thickness) as a 80w-90 gear oil..just different rating scales....and as good if not better shear and wear properties...

It's not "what" you ride, it's "that" you ride.

I may be reading between the lines, but that seems to say "backwards compatible" without actually saying "backwards compatible."
