Got a Screw Loose 1 Month ago
Starting my long list of wanna dos and gotta dos on the bike finally. Went in to clean and recharge my K&N filter for the stock airbox and discovered that one of the screws that hold the filter inside the box had backed completely out and other was halfway out. Filter was pretty much loose. Wonder how long it's been like that. Will have to be more attentive.

Also trimmed my choke knob and wrapped my coils and wires today. Left them off for now, though, with the idea of adjusting my valves this week. (Still fighting the fear monster on that one).

Also on the To-Do List by the time I leave for New England in 3-1/2 weeks:

  • Install risers

  • Replace control cables (when they arrive)

  • Install new front brake line

  • Replace all brake fluid

  • Install 33-tooth front pulley and clean belt guides

  • Grease neck bearings

  • File down the leading edge of the front brake pads

  • Replace fork oil

Keep in mind, I've never done more than replace plugs and changed oil in 30 years of riding before this bike. You guys are gonna make a wrench outa me yet!

Soba, man do I feel ya! Mines due too. It's not just the fear, but the time and downtime.

PS That's a big a#$ list for 3 1/2 weeks. Best to ya!

Ratl.

The door to Tinkersville is right in front of you. Just open it up and come on in.

How many miles on the valves SobaCracka? If you're at the 16,000 mile mark (or so), and the bike doesn't sound different.......ride it. Or you could do like I did , waste the $$ at a dealership to tell you they were "in spec" . Your choice. BTW , Enjoy your ride , I'm headed there next year 'bout this time. BB

Yeah, I skipped it at 16,000 miles. Just crossed 27,000 miles the other day. With 2300 miles or so in 5 days looking at me at the end of the month, I'd rather take a look at them now. Because they should get noisier gradually, I don't want to run the risk of missing the point where they really need adjusting, y'know.

Two riding buddies agree with me that the valves are a bit "chattery."

Well, I hope you pass within riding distance of here. Maybe we could do a few miles together.

Akela,

We're heading through New York to Vermont, up into Quebec, then through New Hampshire, Maine, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, then back through New York and Pennsylvania on the way home. You know, about a 20-minute ride.

Depending on what format and size the maps are when we get the route mapped out, I might post them.
