Ticking Noise 3 Months, 4 Weeks ago
I have a 2003 Road Star Silverado I bought a couple of months ago with 8300 miles. Although the previous owner told me he changed the oil about 1,000 miles earlier, it was almost a year so I put in a new Purolator filter and Castrol V Twin 20-50 synthetic based oil. It seemed to be much smoother initially but about 200 miles later, it developed a ticking sound coming from the engine much like you hear in a car when the oil is low. I have checked the oil under every condition and it seems fine. It may just be a coincidence and the sound could be caused by something else. Any ideas?

rbreit. I have an 03' also and I can tell ya' that it's the sound of a happy R*. It's the nature of the bike. The valves, which are making the ticking noise, can be adjusted but the noise is just part of the bike's makeup. Mine sounds like a 1/4 full can of ball bearings but hasn't had any problems yet . Air cooled bikes have an inherent quality that makes them kinda noisy. Me, I just got louder pipes to drown out some of the noise. After a while you'll get to understand what the bike is telling ya' by the different noises. Overall it's a great bike!

I bought an '01 with only 3,100 miles. I almost turned it down, but my R* experienced friend said the sounds were all normal. I bought... and fell in love!

Adjusted the one offender, and it is quieter, but still ticks some.

rbreit!
She's just talking to you Check your oil if you are reading it on the dipstick you are probably ok there. When you changed your oil did you just put 4 qts in?
Second if you lugg the motor it will tick especially if its really hot.

As folks have pointed out ... the engine ticks.

But .... you need to know the difference between the 'normal' ticks and those that indicate a problem which could signal that a valve adjustment is necessary or the bled-down lifter, etc.

By listening to your engine.

I know it tought ... especially if you come from a water cooled bike and you hear all these 'new' noises. Those valves can get noisy as the bike heats up.

The lifters are kinda easy ... you hear ticking upon startup which slowly goes away.

So it's not so much that you hear noises but what's the new noise.

yeh, thats kinda how I see it too, if you hear something new, it will drive you crazy to fix it, (headlight, windshield, brakes, belt) most of the time its one of them, but when i put the valvoline in it was obvious what it was
