Magnetic bolts 3 Months, 3 Weeks ago

I will be doing another oil change in about a week. Thinking of using the magnetic bolts. What size do I need? Also they appear to come with a plastic washer. Do you use that? Can I replace both (if so, same size for both) or just the front one?

I may be corrected on this, but I got mine at Advance Auto for about $2 apiece. I believe the package is marked 14 X 1.5 (head is 14 mm). I also bought brass washers (10 mm, if I remember correctly). They sell the crush washers as well.

Trying Musky's method. Using the small magnets from a computer hard drive on the filter. Cheap and probably as effective. Strong enough to stay on too. Kinda hard to get them off though. Try one on a flat steel surface and you'll see.

You do both drain plugs with the mag bolts? Do you use the plastic washers also that came in the packages with the bolts or trash those and just use the brass washers?

Both bolts are the same. You need a seal of some sort under the bolt head; whether it is plastic or fiber or soft metal doesn't matter.

sorry, so this leads to the question, why buy a different washer if the bolt comes with a plastic one?

I bought mine at Advanced Auto as well, and the nylon washer that came with them worked fine .I also bought the washer that was packaged alone to use when you toss the original which is recommended after every oil change and it had a rubber gromet inside the brass washer. It leaked when I used it on the crankcase bolt as it overlapped a small rise in the surrounding metal around the drain bolt hole.It worked fine on the oil tank bolt.....Coug

Got two of the 14mm at Pep Boys for $2.49 a piece, and I used the plastic washers that came with them...work great, not a drop of oil leaking anywhere. Next change, I'll just pick up some crush gasket washer seal thingies...
