replaced wheel bearings 3 Months, 2 Weeks ago
I just put in new wheel bearings in the front....the home mechanic way with a large socket on the outside race. I put the axle in and held it on either side and had someone spin the wheel for me. Before I put them in they spun nice and easy and now it feels like them might be grinding. I can feel some vibration through the axle. What do you guys think?....did I ruin the bearings?

Yes you likely did damage the bearings. Also possible that they are not seated but I doubt that if you could get the axel in. Using a socket to drive them in is a crap shoot at best. The socket not only caonacts the outer race but possibly the edge of the seal as well. Also possible that you went a bit off location with one hit. Although we do use a hammer on occasion to drive bearings in industry we always use a mild steel punch(NEVER brass or aluminium) on the out race for a hub mount and on the inside race for a shaft mount. The use of a hammer can also shock bearings pretty good. if I can recommend I would say replace them again but take the wheel to a local machine shop and have them pressed in properly. A motorcycle is no place to do a shade tree mechanic repair.IMHO

Quote out of the service manual. "Use a socket that matches the diameter of the wheel bearing outer race and oil seal". You could have hit the inner race if you had the flat end on the bearing.

Ya that is no suprise to me at all. During travels to Japanese plants I have personally witnessed their maintenance guys do some real questionable things. So to see something like that show up in a manual is par for the course.
One of the first things we do when new machinery arrives from the mother land is to ditch the maintenace guides(TRUE)
There have been stories here about dishing out the rear hub. This alone could be caused by improper bearing insertions. Not soley but a possibility.
No substitute for doing things the right way(especially on a motorcycle): a press.
