Frank, a blessing that you found the problem other than at 70 miles an hour. Lucky it only cost $70 something.

Well, I just put on my 33-tooth front pulley and - yes - my front pulley nut was loose and the pulley had a touch of play in it. I also recommend checking your pulley. I also have a 2005.
No lock washer on it either, so I'll be making a phone call tomorrow!

I pulled my cover to check mine as well (looking for snakes!). The nut was tight. There was no locknut, but Yama had used the kind of washer that you bend a tab over against a face of the nut. That secures it easily as well. Mine was manufactured Sept. of 2000.
I was curious about the mention of nylon rollers too, so I learned that they must be an anti-override type of roller that only come into play if ever the belt attempts to jump a tooth on the front drive pulley, as they would not make any contact otherwise.

Checked mine this weekend. Lockwasher in place and it was tight. I couldn't get a socket on it to check torque without bending the washer out of the way so I left well enough alone as all looked well. then I went for an all day ride through the wine country!
Oh, while I was at it I painted the cover so that the cast in spokes mimic the rear pulley, pulled off the little plastic cover over the center too and painted it black also. By the way under the whole smash it is nice chorme BUT they managed to cast in a number in to it or I would have left the outer cover off and dumped some more weight. working on an idea to do so later.
