Rear Axle 3 Months, 2 Weeks ago
|
|

Hi Folks. Went to remove my R* 1700 Midnight Silverado 2006 rear axle today following the instructions as per the thread on this forum. When I had loosened off caliper adjuster, alignment adjusters, r h side axle nut etc, lifted the bike enough to take the strain off the axle to extract but when I tried to pull the axle out it is absolutely solid. I can hardly even turn it with a socket and extension bar it is that tight. It will turn but it creaks and turns in fits and starts, not smooth at all and takes a lot of effort to turn. I thought it should slide out reasonably easily or am I not doing something right. I would appreciate any comments. Many Thanks.

If you have the axle nut off and adjustement bolts loosened then there is nothing else keeping it in.
You need to raise the back enough to take the load off the rear end but not so high that the tire is off the ground.
If you raise it with the lift, watch the axle in the slot. With the bike resting on the ground the axle will be hitting the top of the slot, as you raise the bike the axle moves to the bottom of the slot. Raise the bike just enough so that the axle is between the bottom and the top of the slot ... should slip out like a greased pig.

Thanks for that Doc. Is the slot you are talking about the slot where the axle moves back and fore for belt tensioning?

That's correct.
The axle is just a bit smaller in diameter than the height of the slot.
You'll see what I mean when you get on you knees and check it out.

I've seen (read: had!) axles seized in the wheel due to lack of maintenance. Those are a True headache , and require patience to remove said axle without damage. Roadies should be too new to suffer from that , but a piece of advice , use a good bearing grease and put a nice thin layer end to end on the axle during re-assembly to make removing it the next time that much easier. I had my R* at the dealer last year to replace the rear axle because of just such a problem. The mechanic indicated that the problem was dissimilar metal corrosion between the axle nut and the surrounding components. They fixed me up relatively quickly.
