Oil Change interval 3 Months, 2 Weeks ago
Not clear on mileage and or time frames on correct interval. Also 20/40 yamilube is reccomended in the manuel so I hear. No manuel here., althouh ordered one.Is going synthetic reccomended by the yami floks. If so 20/50 seems to be talked alot here .Brands vary also but not sure what the differences are. The 50 weight # sounds a bit high . Opinions and history of problems after chanding to syn oil please ???

go here...http://www.paulmilner.com/yamaha/handbuch/handbuch.htm#roadstar for your manual....but in my opinion i think a bike's oil should be changed every 2500 to 3000 miles depending on how ya ride her..my friend changes his every 2000 on the mile..i use synthetic

No reason not to go synthetic. No reason not to step up to a 20w-50. It's not really thicker, it only means it will perform in hot conditions as a 50 weight oil... and when you pour it, you will plainly see it runs faster and thinner than a similar dino 50 weight.

And yeh, changing every 3,000 or so makes perfect sense.

Oil doesn't fail... usually the additive package, of which about 30% of a quart of oil is made of, will fail first. Some go longer between changes, and I don't doubt for a moment that you can, it's just that my heart won't let me go further than that between changes. I like to pamper my Baby!

As for anyone having trouble for having switched to synthetic... couldn't happen. It's only an improvement.

And DON'T buy a manual... it's free on-line. Print out pages as you need them.

My Yamaha dealer said the company quit making Yamalube 20/40 so that's a good reason in itself to go synthetic. As far as the manual is concerned, well I like to kick back in my recliner and just thumb through it for the hell of it.

I use full synthetic 20W 50 Mobil 1 VTwin. I run it 4,000 miles between changes and always use a top quality filter, K&N is my preference. If you use a high grade oil and quality filter there is no need to change as often. In fact we could probably go longer than 4K, but I feel comfortable with that interval. If you do a lot of city driving at slow speed you may want to change earlier.

I would definately go with Synthetic you will NOT be disappointed it will quiet the noisey valves, and the motor will run cooler. I run Amsoil 20W50 and they say you can go 6000 miles between oil changes I change mine at 4000 when I did it last the oil was pretty clean, certainly NOT like 3000mile oil change on my truck I also use the Amsoil filter too which you could change every OTHER oil change I would rather change it every time..

I do the same, in fact if you read our manual it says that you change the filter only at 4000 miles and the oil and filter every 8. Now if that's good enough with regular oil the running synthetic oil should be vastly better, you could probably push it out to 5000 miles and 10000 miles between changes.
I wouldn't but you could if you had to.
Also there is a big difference between the K&N filter and that stock Yamaha filter from what I understand.
The K&N being superior.

According to the manual for my '08 Road Star Silverado "S" you change the oil every 4,000 miles and the oil filter every 8,000 miles.

I would never do this though, just makes sense to change the filter with every oil change.

While we're talking about oil changes what's the concensus about how many miles you should have before switching to full synthetic? The service department where I purchased the bike says they don't believe in using full synthetic due to having a wet clutch. From looking at the differnt forums, using the Mobil 1 V-Twin or Amsoil full synthetics this isn't a problem. They are JASO rated just like the Yamalube dino oil.

I fully plan on swithing to the full synthetic but not real sure how many miles I should have first.

Smith I dont think it matters.. Some say you should wait after 2-3k .. I have a 08 also, I ran 100 miles dumped it and put castrol 20/50 dino oil in it ill hit 600 miles tomorrow and when I get home im going synthetic blend Maxima maxum4 20/50 oil.. Its a ester synthetic base stocks.. Great stuff ill run this for 2500 miles then go to there 100% Maima Extra syn which is the "good stuff" hehe
this one from 600-2500 miles http://www.maximausa.com/products/4stroke/maxum4synthblend.asp
then this one after 2500.. http://www.maximausa.com/products/4stroke/maxum4synthextra.asp
I also like Shell Rotella T dino oil its thick and holds up in the extreme temps we run out mx bikes so I know it would be great in these vtwins.
